The world of deathcore is growing in popularity at a rate faster than your morning poop after a good coffee (sorry not sorry) thanks to bands like Lorna Shore, Thy Art Is Murder, Left To Suffer and Fit For An Autopsy, but one act you should definitely not be sleeping on is Century Media Records' Ov Sulfur, who obliterated expectations in 2022 with their diverse singles ‘Wide Open‘, ‘Stained in Rot‘ and ‘Death Ov Circumstance‘.
We last spoke to the band during our Year in Review series, where they told us to expect new music going into 2023 and they certainly didn't lie about that, because they've dropped new song 'Earthen' this morning and goddamn it's gooood. Jumping on the symphonic deathcore bandwagon, we find frontman Ricky Hoover sounding more sinister than ever before as the band surrounds his vocals with menacing riffs, harmonic pinches and an audio assault that'll raise the eyebrow of the biggest critic! The chorus features the only clean section of the track, giving us a moment to catch our breaths before the chaos is unleashed yet again.
The thing I've loved about this band is their constant flow of tunes, and (spoiler) details of their upcoming album The Burden Ov Faith dropped online, so we're bringing you all the info early - it's set for release on March 24th and features a stellar lineup of cameos including Howard Jones (Light The Torch), Taylor Barber (Left To Suffer), Alex Terrible (Slaughter To Prevail), Kyle Medina (Bodysnatcher) and Lindsay Schoolcraft (ex-Cradle of Filth).
On the new single, Hoover comments:
"'Earthen' is about my nephew who died from cancer at 16... After failed bone-marrow transplants, he decided to stop and let it take its course. It's about witnessing that and being there, holding him when he died. That song is very emotional for me...
I was actually crying in the studio tracking vocals. We needed the video to capture the sheer tragedy of that situation to really underscore how unfair and unjust it is for any 'god' to put a child through something as awful as cancer."
Stay tuned for more details about how to grab your copy and get ready because I have a feeling this may be Ov Sulfur's biggest year as a band yet. Don't get left behind.
