Aus Music Month: 5 Old School Good Things Festival Essentials
November is Australian Music Month and here at Wall of Sound we like to celebrate our favourite local acts. The month peaks with the annual fundraising extravaganza Aus T-Shirt Music Day, this year on Thursday, November 30. All proceeds go to Support Act, who help musicians in times of need.
Today we are feeling a bit nostalgic as we also look ahead to the Good Things festival taking place in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane this weekend. The eclectic fest has a stunning collection of international and local talent, but five bands caught my eye – mainly because they wouldn’t have been out of place at Big Day Out 1999! They are of my vintage you might say. In fact, three of the bands below were at the first festival I ever attended (Push Over ‘97 in Melbourne).
Here’s 5 cracking bands that are worth revisiting this month. If you have a t-shirt from one of these bands, tag us in a pic on our socials and drop a donation to our team here:
Aus Music T Shirt Day – Team Wall of Sound
Spiderbait
Essential track: ‘Buy Me a Pony’
First Australian song to win the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1996, a biting punk rock takedown of the music industry. Still a great live band with multi vocalists and a chart-topping cover of ‘Black Betty’ in the set.
Boom Crash Opera
Essential track: ‘Onionskin’
Aussie pub pop/rock heroes who had a string of hits in the late 80s to early 90s. Likely to be a good time at the festival with gems like this one, ‘The Best Thing’ and ‘Dancing in the Storm’.
Eskimo Joe
Essential track: ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’
Indie darlings who became one of Perth’s great rock bands, with enough class to get a crowd singing along to this single’s iconic refrain. Mainstage worthy.
