Future Static Give Daddy Yankee’s ‘Gasolina’ A Much Needed Metal Upgrade

Future Static gasolina metalcore prog

If you’ve been following our coverage of Future Static, then you would have known the band teased this all the way back in December last year when they featured in The Next Generation of Heavy episode of Wall Of Sound TV.

Today, the prog-core quintet have unleashed their cover of the infectiously catchy dance-floor filler ‘Gasolina‘ – originally released by Daddy Yankee himself in 2004, it was later heard in nightclubs across the country circa 2006 when the track was eventually released down under. The song’s origins hold a very special place in the heart of frontwoman Amariah Cook, who was raised in Barcelona, so bringing the two worlds together was a dream.

“Having grown up in Barcelona, I loved the idea of reinventing a song that was so present in my upbringing. Over there, the metalheads hate reggaeton, so bringing those two mortal enemies together was an entertaining idea for me. I’ve always had a part in my soul that wanted to try to merge these two socially and musically opposing groups together”

“Apart from it connecting me to my Spanish roots, doing this cover also meant blending all of our lives together. Even though we were all raised in such vastly different lifestyles and places. It is one of those songs which was extremely popular all over the world, and with this cover, we strive to bring back that sense of planetary community.”

On top of today’s new single, the band also have a stack of news to share, including venturing outside of Australia for the first time to tackle international festivals in Germany! We grabbed Kira and Jackson for a quick catch-up to suss out the vibe…

Between our last chat and now, how has the band grown and what’s the status of that debut album you teased?

Kira: Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to play some killer shows; we had a massive end of year headliner last December, we got to jump on Unify Off the Record and CVLTFEST, and we were lucky enough to support Jinjer and Voyager, two massive acts we really admire. But to be honest, most of the work has been behind the scenes getting ready for our album release – keep an eye out, we’re taking over the rest of 2023.

You’re also crossing off one of the big goals you mentioned to us, heading overseas to play some big-ass festivals in Germany. How did y’all react to the invite and what does this mean to be kicking goals so soon?

Jackson: Honestly? It doesn’t feel real. Like it wasn’t even 12 months ago since we last spoke with WoS and explained how it’s a dream of ours to travel overseas to play a show, like to play any show, and now within a year, we have two international music festivals we’re playing at. When we got the invite and confirmation from the organisers, we were so quick to say yes. It’s all we’ve ever wanted to do; to go overseas and show them all what we can do. Once they see us, they won’t be able to forget who we are. We’re FS, baby; pay attention.

The future is bright for Future Static… don’t get left behind!
