Let The Silver Scream 2 Song Inspiration Speculation Begin…

If you haven’t guessed already, “we all go a little mad sometimes” at Wall of Sound HQ over horror/core kings Ice Nine Kills and when we heard that they’d be releasing a sequel to their killer album The Silver Scream, our minds went into overdrive thinking about the movies they would be covering in this bloody second offering…

To get you up to speed – The Silver Scream featured songs based around iconic movies like Scream, IT, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Crow (to name a few). It brought both the metalcore community and horror/thriller fans together (albeit those who weren’t already fans of both) and gave the movies we grew up watching a heavy, breakdown inducing soundtrack – with theatrics and visuals both haunting and awe-inspiring!

Overnight, the band released a teaser on their social media pages which revealed the official tracklisting for their upcoming release and, as expected, we’re jumping straight into investigation mode to try and decipher which songs will be based around which movies…

Putting this piece together is Browny (horror fanatic), Carys (English teacher) and her brother Gwilym, all of whom are mad Ice Nine Kills frothers who are passionate about figuring out which movies inspired these new tracks. We already know lead single ‘Hip To Be Scared‘ is inspired by the cult classic film American Psycho, but what else could the boys be covering this time around based purely on the forthcoming song titles and clues we’ve uncovered? Let’s speculate:

1. Opening Night…

Prediction: Suspiria

UPDATE: This one is simply an introduction tape detailing how the album was never supposed to be released – akin to the tape message in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre

For this one, we were thinking about the possibility of a horror movies based around some kind of stage or theatrical performance where things go belly up and came to the conclusion that Suspiria would best fit this description. The Italian movie is based around Susie, an American dancer who scores the role of lead dancer at Helena Markos Dance Co. in Germany. The movie contains creepy elements like murder, witchcraft, supernatural themes and is well known within the horror world as one of the OG classics.

2. Welcome To Horrorwood

Prediction: Mulholland Drive

UPDATE: This is an original song that ties in the storyline behind the scenes and the world of Hollywood

Another tricky one to try and decipher. After ruling out movies like The Purge, Scream 3 and They Live (all based in LA/Hollywood) we came to the conclusion to focus on Mulholland Drive. Directed by mind-bending filmmaker David Lynch, this neo-noir trip through Hollywood features Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), an aspiring actress new to Los Angeles, who befriends an amnesiac lady named Rita (Laura Harring) who is recovering from a car accident. The movie is a mindfuck and hard to detail every single moment, but it’s regarded as one of the best thrillers ever released.

Possible relation is I9K‘s Silver Scream 2 Lady In Red cassette tape – there’s several scenes throughout the movie featuring a women dressed in red and the only other option for this clue would have been Carrie, however, seeing as though Ice Nine Kills released a song titled ‘Hell In The Hallways‘ based on this subject matter, we’re ruling that out and going for Mulholland Drive instead!

3. A Rash Decision

Confirmed: Cabin Fever

UPDATE: Thanks to our eagle eyes reader Justine Baddeley, we now know that ‘A Rash Decision‘ is based upon Cabin Fever due to a new vinyl variant dubbed Cabin Splatter which pretty much confirms it.

Back in 2002, Eli Roth released the original Cabin Fever upon the world and it changed the “Cabin in the Woods” centric storyline forever. A horrifying flesh eating virus (which starts out as a rash) infects five teenagers and the way they handle the infection spreading between them results in some pretty “rash decision making” e.g. segregating one of their friends to the garden shed to, well, fall apart… literally!

4. Assault & Batteries

Confirmed: Child’s Play

Your thought process for this one may seem easier than expected, but it’s not. We were fixated on the batteries aspect of the title and what do batteries go in? Toys! Cue the long list of movies with killer toys like Puppet Master, Dead Silence or Annabelle however we chucked a hard right in favour of one of the more notable classics, Child’s Play! Murderer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses black magic to transfer his soul to become the raging red-headed doll Chucky!

5. The Shower Scene

Confirmed: Psycho

UPDATE: Probably the easiest one to guess because of that iconic shower scene

Alfred Hitchcock is the greatest thriller director of all time. All time. And if you don’t recognise this iconic shower scene and theme music, then you’re not a true horror fan!

6. Funeral Derangements

Confirmed: Pet Sematary

When someone leaves this mortal coil, you have to put together arrangements for their funeral… But what happens if that someone comes back from the dead? Well, that derails your funeral plans doesn’t it ANNND leaves you with a former living “thing” that comes back different from how they used to be. If you’ve seen the movie, the nonsense you just read will make sense… if you haven’t, then it’s time for an old school movie night!

Side Note: The 2019 remake wasn’t that bad if you’d prefer an updated version of the story…

Update: It looks as if INK are using the remake as the subject for their song!

7. Rainy Day

Confirmed: Resident Evil

UPDATE: A new teaser confirms it is based upon the Resident Evil movies.

In the first movie way back in 2002, Michelle Rodriguez plays the character Rain who is a total badass. Her special ops team, alongside protagonist Alice (Milla Jovovich) infiltrate an underground base known as The Hive, which is run by the Umbrella Corporation, who have been experimental with a substance called the T-Virus, which reanimates the dead and turns them into Zombies!

8. Hip To Be Scared (ft. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach)

Confirmed: American Psycho

“HEY PAUL!!!!!”

9. Take Your Pick (ft. Corpsegrinder of Cannibal Corpse)

Confirmed: Basic Instinct or My Bloody Valentine

UPDATE: Yep, it was the obvious choice of My Bloody Valentine and it’s fucking masssssive! Corpsegrinder really takes this to new, heavier territory for INK!

Two completely different movies, two completely different weapons, two very similar outcomes!

Let’s take a look at the song itself – It features a collaboration with the scariest fucker in the heavy/death metal scene, George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher from Cannibal Corpse so first of all, you know this song is going to sound br00tal as fuck without even hearing it. The title also features the word “Pick” which we’ve taken into consideration as the murder weapon used by the villains in both of the aforementioned films – My Bloody Valentine features a mining pickaxe whereas Basic Instinct is an ice pick.

There’s a blood-smeared Silver Scream 2 vinyl variant called dubbed Love Hurts which could be related to this song as My Bloody Valentine is set on Valentine’s Day and Basic Instinct is about a detective who falls in love with a murder suspect. My Bloody Valentine is the obvious choice here, but with Ice Nine Kills‘ quirky antics and ability to throw us off the scent, we’re kinda hoping it’s Basic Instinct just so we can see Corpsegrinder in the music video portraying Sharon Stone

10. The Box (ft. Brandon Saller of Atreyu and Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King)

Prediction: Se7en

UPDATE: Yep, it was Hellraiser all along. Killer track with killer cameos!

To be honest, Hellrasier was the most obvious choice for this title, but we’re going with a different angle way away from the social norm, in favour of the psychological thriller Se7en instead. Starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey, this movie centred around a psycho killer murdering people based around the seven deadly sins – Pride, Covetousness, Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Anger, and Sloth.

It also has a pretty climatic ending involving a box that NO ONE SAW COMING when it was first released…

The song features Brandon Saller (Atreyu) and Ryan Kirby (Fit For A King) so it’s gonna be pretty screamy!

11. F.L.Y. (ft. Buddy Nielsen of Senses Fail)

Prediction: The Silence of the Lambs or The Fly

Straight to the point on this one, the obvious title may have you thinking it could be based upon the 1986 creature feature The Fly starring Jeff Goldblum, but that’s just wayyy too obvious for the first choice. Instead, we’ve taken the acronym F.L.Y. and settled on First. Love. Yourself. which we believe could be related to Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) from The Silence of the Lambs; a serial killer who is unhappy with the way he looks (probably the friendliest way to put it) murders young women and removes their skin to kinda/sorta stitch together for a body suit of his own.

12. Würst Vacation

Prediction: The Human Centipede

UPDATE: It’s Hostel, you sickos

Think of the worst vacation you could ever have… Then read the below synopsis of The Human Centipede and realise how far from WORST VACATION EVER you truly were!

Two American tourists in Germany, are drugged and involuntarily detained by crazed surgeon Josef Heiter when they seek help at his house after they get a flat tire. I (Browny) have unfortunately seen this movie and it fucked me for life. If this song is based upon that movie, I’m gonna need therapy…

Note: Other ideas we had were Hostel (but it’s based in Slovakia) and Midsommar (but that’s set in Sweden).

13. Ex-Mørtis

Confirmed: The Evil Dead

UPDATE: Spencer confirmed this song was based upon the Evil Dead series in our interview with him!

For fans of The Evil Dead series, this would have come to mind straight away – but for the ill-informed, we got you! Throughout the franchise (movies, tv series and video games) The Book of the Dead is known as Necronomicon Ex-Mortis which is ancient book wielding the power to control the dead, deadites and summon the Kandarian Demon.

14. Farewell II Flesh

Prediction: Candyman

Another easy one with the answer right in front of our eyes the whole time!

The title of the second Candyman movie is Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh. Speaks for itself doesn’t it BUT if you’re not completely sold on that fact, one of the vinyl variants for this album is called Honey-Hooked.

Bees. Hooks. It’s Candyman!

That’s our hot take on what we think will be on the new Ice Nine Kills album. We don’t know what these tracks sound like yet and are going off our knowledge of the horror world and the band’s extensive back catalogue which ruled out other movies like The Exorcist and The Shining (plus what’s covered on first The Silver Scream) and you can eliminate any literature turned movie adaptions that were covered on the band’s 2015 album Every Trick In The Book.

UPDATE: The list has frontman Spencer Charnas‘ tick of approval too it seems!

It’s all confirmed now – how’d you go? Read our review of The Silver Scream 2 here
