Modern metalcore maestros Currents have been delivering tunes ranging from crushingly heavy to melodically beautiful, often combining the two extremes into a single track for a decade now. Their last album ‘The Way It Ends’ received wide-praise - can the Connecticut locals supply fans with another dose of metalcore mayhem?

The four singles dropped for the album’s campaign certainly suggest so. Title piece ‘The Death We Seek’ and ‘So Alone’ provide the platform for the band to flex their variety on, walking the line between vulnerable beauty and aggression-filled rage. The band’s intense fury hits with full force in ‘Vengeance’, while ‘Remember Me’ showcases the band’s raw and emotional side.

Chaotic and unrelenting are words that come to mind when listening to ‘Living In Tragedy’. Portals to the depths of hell will open within mosh pits if this one gets added to the setlist. On the other end of the spectrum is album closer ‘Guide Us Home’. It is a classic power-ballad and piles on the melancholy.

‘Unfamiliar’ is emotional turmoil in music form, largely delivered through soothing melodies and soaring clean vocals, though features a second verse ripped straight from hell and a shreddy guitar solo for good measure. Siting within a similar territory is ‘Gone Astray’. The opening verse’s combination of clean vocals, an uncompromisingly heavy riff, and a pounding drum beat creates a sense of unease that continues throughout the track.

‘Over and Over’ and ‘Beyond This Road’ demonstrate the band’s ability to seamlessly take listeners between states of stank-faced grooving, full-throttle headbanging, floating on clouds, and throwing fists so hard they could punch through a wall.

The Death We Seek takes Currents' winning brand of metalcore and cranks it up a notch. If you’re a modern metalcore fan I’d be giving this album some serious playtime.
