The duo that is Loveless are on the rise and I've been following their journey for quite some time now, but, back in August last year when Julian Comeau and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail made their way to Australia for a small string of headline shows, I was lucky enough to meet up and have a chat with them at the BMG Headquarters. As I sat across the table from Julian and Dylan, admittedly I was a little nervous, however, that was very quickly dissipated as they both held such a warm and welcoming presence that made talking to them for the first time feel as if I was talking to them for the tenth, which resulted in the three of us having a long conversation, covering everything from new music to videogames, movies and more. Our first point of call came to discussing new music and not only have they released their new single 'Addicted' today, but there's plenty more to come with an album inbound. Julian was happy to divulge some sneak peeks, revealing:

"I think with this one, we've been able to dig in more, it's not just me in my bedroom and Dylan working in the studio, it's been a much more collaborative process between Dylan and I. We even brought in Steven Hawker, our drummer from tour, he plays on half of this record."

He then went on to say how this record has been such a great experience, and he felt like their first record, 2021's Loveless I, was all about pain and suffering, but this one felt "much more hopefulwhile still dealing with some darker topics". As a fan, this has me excited to hear the growth and changes that have been brought to the table for this yet-to-be-announced record while still incorporating the signature Loveless sound.

Since the band have collaborated with many artists in the past, such as Australia's Patient Sixty-Seven, Sleeping With Sirens' vocalist KellinQuinn, and Tyler 'Telle' Smith from The Word Alive to name a few - I had to know if their upcoming release would have any more collabs they'll be adding to this extensive and ever-growing list. "Mmmmaybe!" was the answer from both Julian and Dylan with a cheeky smile painted on their faces. Clearly not yet allowed to spill the beans, but not being able to hide the excitement of what's to come in their facial expressions, they continued.

"There's definitely a couple of names and a couple of cool people that I'd love to work with and to collaborate with, and we love a lot of artists, but nothing that we can confirm or deny at this point..."

Without being able to let the cat out of the bag with future collaborations, I took a chance to ask about a past one that many people don't even know exists. Backing vocals on the most recent Sonic the Hedgehog videogame soundtrack - Sonic Frontiers. When I mentioned this, the excitement lit up Julian's face as he said "I DID DO THAT!" with both pride and shock that it was brought up.

"When Julian texted me and told me 'Hey check this out, and by the way, don't tell anybody about it but Kellin and I are doing songs for Sonic the Hedgehog' I was like 'What the fuck did you just say to me?!' " Dylan said with a laugh. "Yeah so I don't actually sing it, my voice might be on it, I don't know, but almost all of my vocals that are in there are the screaming vocals and Kellin just did one screaming vocal," Julian added.

"Oh my god I would love to do that again. I was asked by my friend Tyler Smith [The Word Alive], he had a really fast turnaround and he had to do three songs, a song per day, and he asked if I could come through and help him do it, and I said 'Absolutely dude' and he asked if we could get Kellin to sing and I said 'I don't know, I can try!'

But Sega were not going to have me sing it, and Kellin's a great name and a great vocalist and so Tyler hit me up and we did it. Three songs in three days for the bosses and that was it. We sent it off to Sega and they were like 'Great, good job!'" Julian said, expanding by saying "I would love to do more, but unfortunately I was not asked to come back, they actually kinda cut me out of that arrangement, but there are certainly heavier songs coming to the Sonic world, so I will say that much".

If you're a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and heavy music, this will come as a nice little treat to hear. As conversation flowed and I got to know the duo a bit more, we spoke about their incredible ability to be so flexible and adapt to almost any style of music yet be able to make it sound like their own. "We definitely try to." Julian said.

"A lot of bands definitely try to live in and conquer the scene, and we love the scene, but we're not trying to be the biggest pop punk band in the world. We're trying to be the biggest band that we can be and the happiest, most fulfilled artists that we can be. Every single song, I sit back and go 'Okay.. what do WE want to do with this? What kind of story do we want to tell and how do we want to tell that story?' Which I think hopefully sets us apart from some other bands who are maybe a bit more comfortable"

Once I finished my chat with Loveless, I left feeling just pure joy and excitement. The pair are such genuine people who are making music that they are passionate about and that they would want to listen to. They're almost hitting that sweet spot of alternative music that got lost in the modern world of needing something to be viral or doing it for the sake of releasing music so they stay relevant. The passion that I felt from the pair talking about new music and touring transpired, leaving me feeling that same passion and ready to hear what's next.Interview by Heather McNab.
