Surviving Son, Shane Hawkins, Steals Taylor Hawkins Tribute Show
What a year it's been for Foo Fighters; from playing a surprise show in Geelong, Victoria one week and celebrating their Studio 666 film soundtrack Dream Widow to reporting the tragic and sudden loss of long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins the next. In case you missed it, after an extended silence while the band begun their grieving, they announced two tribute shows in London and LA on September 3 at Wembley Stadium and September 27 at The Kia Forum, respectively.
If you've had any news source available to you over the weekend, it would have been hard for you to miss coverage of the first of the two events, with millions of hearts bleeding for the late Taylor Hawkins. The lineup for the London edition was nothing short of astonishing and included musicians from Metallica, AC/DC, Queen and a WHOLE bunch more.
Some of the highlights of the event included a surprise performance from Them Crooked Vultures, the first in twelve years. The supergroup included Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Mr. Dave Grohl himself and most excitingly Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. It was an incredibly fitting reason to reunite and felt really special to all. The trio played 'Gunman' and a couple of covers. Some other performances included Lars Ulrich and Brian Johnson on 'Back in Black' with The Darkness' Justin Hawkins taking the mic for parts as well.
It was a remarkable concert, one for the ages and a true honour to the Foo Fighters' late drummer, but there was one performance that stole the show and punters' hearts. If you were preoccupied with Father's Day activities and haven't seen it yet - surviving 16-year-old-son, Shane Hawkins was invited on stage to play drums on 'My Hero' with the band.
The sheer emotion from Shane was enough to blow away viewers. He gave it his all and honoured his dad in the most touching way possible, with Grohl and the band looking back at him regularly in utter awe of the performance. Check out the performance below, look out for a future release of the full-streaming event and get ready for the LA tribute show later this month.
