Make Them Suffer Finally Unveil 'Doomswitch' Single with Alex Reade
What a year or two it's been for Make Them Suffer; talk about tough times. We'll start with the doom and gloom, then we'll 'switch'. After their mammoth 2020 record How To Survive a Funeral, they were plunged into repeated lockdowns and had to cancel every single tour planned; so rough.
For some reprieve, they got to release exceptional single 'Contraband' with Spiritbox's Courtney LaPlante, but it felt like time stood still until they got to play live. It was only at Full Tilt earlier this year that they played some of their new songs live, albeit one member down. Unfortunately it was more than COVID that's made this band suffer, as they also parted ways with Booka Nile.
Needless to say, the return of Make Them Suffer at Full Tilt Festival was triumphant and we got the chance to grab frontman Sean Harmanis to hear what's coming from the band next. Oh, and in the interview he shared that if it was up to him, their new music would be heavier, so we've manifested that comment. Since then, the Perth group announced their Doomswitch Australian tour with Gravemind, Starve and Dark Matter, starting in just a few days, and finally earlier this week, they announced their new keyboardist Alex Reade.
Got all that? Good. Looking forward, Make Them Suffer have finally premiered the 'Doomswitch' single ahead of their Aussie tour of the same name. The five-minute video sees a sci-fi-layered band in an abandoned underground parking lot slam into all of their heavy riffs and bits from the get-go. With the shadow of Reade headbanging on keys, they burst into action with immense energy and adrenaline. Harmanis unloads a 'Vortex' type energy vocally before we get a proper glimpse of Reade as she debuts her clean vocal chorus. With experimental digital elements included on this super heavy track, the addition of a keytar and even some uncleans from Reade, the freshness of this sound will have you pleasantly surprised at the new era of Make Them Suffer.
“Doomswitch is a term coined by online poker players used to describe a hypothesised mechanism by which an online poker site will continually infer bad luck onto a player. Sean related to this term and, at the time, it felt as if a Doomswitch had flicked on his life, so used the concept as the main inspiration for the song. We’ve adopted a new element into our sound along with the inclusion of a new member; Alex. This song marks a new chapter and the next step forward for the band and the sonic shift in Doomswitch really drives that home."
