Okay, before you go on, just know that this isn’t in any way shape or form related to heavy music world (although Northlane did their own cover of the original theme song back in 2011) but ahead of the release of the South Australian filmed reboot of Mortal Kombat hitting theatres next week, the official (updated) theme song has been released and I can assure you that the majority of Wall of Sound readers would have grown up watching the original movie, playing the games or just pretending to be Sub-Zero fighting Scorpion in your household (what’s up to my brother Josh!)
‘Techno Syndrome 2021‘ is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch who was the primary score composer on films such as Blade Runner 2049, IT (I & II), Shazam!, The Invisible Man and stacks more, so he’s got credentials. His vision for the new theme incorporates dubstep, techno/EDM (I don’t know the sub-genres) and the iconic voice we remember from The Immortals original offering from way back in 1995.
While I’m usually opposed to song remakes, I really dig what they’ve done with this updated version and how the new movie intends on distancing itself from the 1995 version (by taking into consideration what the fans wanted since day one – GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE, R18+ RATING AND BR00000TAL FATALITIES)
Mortal Kombat hits cinemas next week. Before then, GET OVER HERE and stream the new theme!
