Any diehard Motörhead collectors out there? It’s your lucky day – well it will be on 30 October. The legendary rock band disbanded in 2015 after the devastating passing of frontman Lemmy Kilmister – however, boy do they leave a legacy behind.
This 1980 landmark album Ace of Spades saw the three amigos of Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor at the helm of the juggernaut that was Motörhead, gaining phenomenal growth in popularity as they forged onward. Anyone disputing this fact need look no further than any heavy metal gig of the time and play ‘spot the Motörhead T-shirt and jacket’. They outnumbered anyone else by at least five to one. A statistic that is still accurate some forty-five years since they first began!
The Ace Of Spades album immediately inspired bands worldwide to absorb the album’s energy, speed, and attitude into their own work. The album is ground zero for thrash, speed metal, and punk / metal crossover.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic album Ace of Spades, the band are releasing a whole bunch of exciting stuff!
First, the milestone album will be presented in two deluxe formats. There will be hardback book-packs in two CD and triple LP formats, featuring a previously unheard concert from the ‘Ace Up Your Sleeve’ tour, the story of the album and many previously unseen photos. The second format will see the album released as an ultimate fan, collector edition Ace Of Spades box set, containing a bevvy of era-specific treasures and some 42 previously unreleased tracks.
Not a physical collector? No dramas – how about a 360 Reality Audio edition? The digital version brings a new immersive music experience utilising Sony’s spatial audio technology, enhancing the sound quality ten-fold. The 360 Reality Audio content will be available on Deezer and Tidal and can be enjoyed on any headphones and also on Amazon Music HD, playing on the Amazon Echo Studio.
Drooling already? But wait, there’s more – a whole lot more. The band have just announced a podcast mini-series called Motörcast, which will ultimately be an opportunity for you to hear from a selection of guests, who were in the midst of this era. The series will reveal all the tales, warts and all!
What’s next? Well, how about officially endorsed Motörhead colouring books? This one’s particularly cool. Joined by Judas Priest for this project, and presented by Rock N’ Roll Colouring, the two bands will release iconic artwork from classic albums and other instantly recognisable images, all printed on high quality paper, in a square format, fully endorsed and officially licenced, these killer designs have the potential for hours of satisfying colouring in.
Each book allows you to raise the horns in celebration of two of Heavy Metal’s most legendary and important bands, letting your imagination run riot as you create your own personalised versions of your favourite designs. You know what they say about colouring in? It’s meant to be really therapeutic for adults, so if those COVID blues are getting you down, pick up a crayon and get head-banging.
Ok, finally the cherry on top. To celebrate the Ace of Spades anniversary, Motörhead have released an animated video for ‘Shoot You In The Back’, with audio taken from Dead Man’s Hand, an LP from their Live in Orleans box-set in 1981. The song was track three on the Ace of Spades record.
‘Shoot You In The Back‘ is one of those classic Motörhead tracks – it’s got that grainy guitar sound, Lemmy’s signature bass plugging away and his excitable gruff voice tearing through the cowboy-focused lyrics. It’s simply as rock and roll as it gets, and the video is really creative, check it out.
If that doesn’t fix your Motörhead needs, then you need to lower your expectations my friend! We’ve got you covered with all the relevant links to the various releases below.
