It’s 2006 and you’re 14 years old. It’s a turbulent time riddled with varying levels of anger and self-discovery. Yellowcard release Lights and Sounds and it becomes another valuable addition to the repertoire of songs that would carry you through a multitude of stages of life. Little did you realise that at the time the transformative and transcendental powers of an emo/punk classic like 'Lights and Sounds' and previously released breakout single 'Ocean Avenue' could have on you for the rest of your life.
Fast forward almost 20 years on, you’re in your thirties and join the legion of Vans and Converse wearing millennials who venture out on a weeknight just to hear the band that carried them through their teenage years and was there to support them the moment they hit the play button. You likely had work in the morning, but the mental marathon assisted with a can of Red Bull to get through the day was well worth it.
We were transported back to that moment during the final stop of Yellowcard's Australian tour - following a couple of delays due to some intense vocal issues - when frontman Ryan Key said that the surprise they had for the fans was an initial recording of their new song 'Better Days'.
“Let’s put our phones away and let’s pretend its 2003 again,” suggested Ryan, and the audience followed his every command. As the band made themselves comfortable on stage and basked in this very moment with us, with no separation between band and audience, it truly felt like it was 2003 again. Not a phone in sight and it felt like we all were our inner teenagers.
And with everything going on around us in the world, the struggles and anxieties all just slipped away for a few hours and everything felt like those 'Better Days' as sung by Mr Key himself. Bask in the glory pf the photo gallery below and remember, Yellowcard are back, for real this time.
Their new album announcement is on the horizon and with Travis Barker both producing and playing drums on it, we can only anticipate the magnitutde of the impact Yellowcard's return will have on the world and for for the band, and their legion of fans...
