Liam Gallagher, the former lead singer of British rock n roll icons, Oasis, unveiled his debut solo album As You Were, ahead of his upcoming sold out UK tour. On 3 January 2016, Liam announced to the Twittersphere - “Solo record are you fucking tripping dickhead im not a c*nt LG”. It comes as no surprise that such a decisive comment can be swiftly 360’d in the Gallagher world, a parallel universe of feuds, profanities, excess, moodiness, and damn fine rock n roll.

Liam has reappeared on the mainstream radar of late, with online sources drip feeding the usual Gallagher brother dramatics. Back in May, Liam’s model son, Lennon, was snapped sporting a Blur T-Shirt on a photo shoot, posting to Instagram “Someone’s getting a smack”, part of dad’s reignited feud with Damon Albarn. Then recently Liam extended a helping hand as part of rock n roll’s greatest sibling rivalry, to older brother and former bandmate Noel, offering a support slot on the As You Were tour if he’s “struggling to sell tickets”. (Support acts for the tour were announced today, sadly it appears Noel didn’t take him up on the kind offer).

As a lover of all things tea, my personal favourite though, is Liam’s recent tea tutorial, a superb 36 second run down on how in the 90’s, he’d have four little geezers making his cuppa. But “now money is too tight” and “no one buys records these days” he has to make it himself, “fuckers”. Brilliant.

All bravado aside, As You Were, is surprisingly calm and mature. It is full of that Brit pop rock Gallagher is naturally drawn to. It feels genuine, and honest.

Opening track, ‘Wall Of Glass’, sets the tone with its raw British alt rock sound and upbeat melodies. ‘Greedy Soul’ arrives with a “fuck you” sound, pop acoustic, dirty, with a distinct Kasabian influence. ‘For What It’s Worth’, serves up the romance in the room, with a classic, timeless sound, showcasing Liam’s signature vocals, which are further explored in ‘When I’m In Need’ showing a soft, sensitive side.

If you’re searching for indulgent guitar solos, head to’ Come Back To Me’. Its dirty, its dancy and will have you air guitaring and swinging your hips in no time. ‘Chinatown’ is my pick of the album, with its relaxed, campfire sound, it can easily be the title track for an indie film. With 2017 being quite the exhaustive year across the globe, it is refreshing to hear a solid British pop rock album. Just good music, good songwriting, good guitars.

In order to save Liam Gallagher from making his own tea, thus leading to the demise of rock n roll (his own words, of course), get out and purchase the album. And stay tuned for what is bound to be many more years of moodiness, feuds, name-calling, beady-eyed entertainment.
