As they take the stage, Eat Your Heart Out instantly bombard you with the kind of enthusiasm you wish Scott Morrison had for climate change. Lead singer Caitlin Henry is a particular highlight as the band pour buckets of sweat out of every pore and she dances around the stage like there is literally no fucks left to give. The crowd eat every aspect of this up and are no doubt drunk enough that they don’t care about the sound issues. Hopefully.
Technical hiccups aside, they manage to rise above it to create an energetic set of pop-punk, emo realness.
PS. Fuck you guy who asked for ‘Wonderwall’.
A. Swayze & the Ghost are up next and all I can say to this is - fucking wow. I mean, really, bravo. Maybe it’s the vintage punk rock look ripped straight from the 80s or maybe it’s the fact Andrew Swayze dances like the late-great Ian Curtis inhabited his body for the duration of their set. But tonight this band seem content with bombarding you with the kind of energetic abandon you only see glimpses of from other people. Maybe it’s Swayze choking himself with the microphone. Maybe it’s the fact he disappears somewhere that I’m pretty sure is not on this Earth. But whatever the fuck it is. This band drips rockstar attitude better than most people twice their age - don’t miss this band if you ever get the chance. They are special.
Honestly though. If there is anyone who oozes rockstar attitude better than the above-mentioned band. It’s probably Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes.
Returning to the stage in Australia after a stint with Bring Me The Horizon. The people in the almost packed Triffid scream from every surface of the venue when Frank Carter himself emerges from the blinding colours permeating the stage.
Opening the show with ‘Tyrant Lizard King’ helps build the atmosphere as every word is sung back to Frank Carter like it was the biggest hit to ever grace the face of the planet. However, it’s not until ‘Juggernaut’ that this set finally finds the groove it needs as bodies start flying about the venue over the top of people and otherwise with increasing abandon. Frank Carter is the lynchpin here as he rides himself atop of people at various points and seemingly bares his soul throughout the night to offer messages of love to everyone lucky enough to bear witness.
It’s like the guy is simultaneously punching you in the head and hugging you all at once.
‘Love Games’ sees the pit become a slow-dance (literally) as people in the crowd grab each other and ballroom dance to a song seemingly about how we keep throwing ourselves back into love over and over again with varied results. It’s a definite highlight of a night filled with them. A few songs later, Frank takes a moment to acknowledge all of the women in the room and kindly asks everyone to make way for a female-only pit, and much to my surprise, all the men in the room happily oblige this request.

So for the next four minutes, ‘Wildflowers’ belongs to the ladies in the room as they dance and singer their souls out of their bodies. It’s a beautifully inclusive moment and something we should see more often at shows.
I’m just fucking saying.
Honestly, the momentum of this band is just phenomenal and it’s a testament to their discography that for a 17 song setlist. There isn’t a single moment that feels over-long or tedious to witness. There is so much I could talk about. Whether it’s the guitarist playing a solo whilst standing on a crowd of people or how when they play ‘Jackals’ the whole room turns into one of the biggest circle pits the Triffid has ever seen.
Everything just fucking works.
The set ends with the practically iconic ‘I Hate You’ and there is nothing but sheer ecstasy felt in the moment when every single person in the room has a shit-eating grin on their face and is screaming “I hate you and I wish you would die” until their throats run hoarse. It’s the defining moment of the night and a perfect encapsulation of how much people care about this band.
I have no hesitation in calling this set one of the best gigs of the year. Three albums deep into his career and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes have solidified themselves as one of the most authentic and urgent bands in the alternative music scene and if tonight is any indication, they are far from being done.
See this band in a bigger venue the next time they come back. Just don’t be the kind of person dumb enough to miss it.
