Supports: The Home Team, Stepson and Bad/Love

Melbourne’s music scene was set ablaze as Caskets took the stage for their Reflections Tour. The night kicked off with Melbourne’s own 4 piece band Bad/Love, a group that has gained its own following and had 170 Russell nearly shoulder to shoulder before the main act had even taken the stage. This is the second time I’ve seen Bad/Love live and once again their stage presence has left me gob-smacked as their set was packed full of energy & emotion. They have just released a new song called ‘5am‘ with a music video coupled up with it, which the audience got to experience that night.

Next up was Stepson, a melodic hardcore band who hail out of Brisbane. Before we get into their set we need to give props to Jordo (drummer) who just had a baby but still managed to make it out on this tour! Now to the nitty gritty, Stepson treated us to a wide range from their discography featuring old songs such as ‘This is How It Feels‘ and their new song ‘VenomBrock Alan Conry, the lead singer, thought it would have been a good idea for the crowd to do a wall of death for their last song. It’s situations like this where I like to take a step back and watch the carnage unfold in front of me.

The Home Team took the stage next, now they might not have been the heaviest band on the bill but they sure brought the heat. It was their first time making the trip down under but they were all very comfortable on stage, especially John Baran (guitar) and Ryan Olson (Bass) who had both been practising their rockstar kicks as they nailed every single one of them. They had quite a setlist as well featuring songs like ‘Right Through Me‘ and ‘Hell‘ but I’m glad they played ‘She’s Quite‘ & ‘Loud‘ as these are two of my personal favourites. Frontman Brian Butcher owned the stage and was a pleasure to watch.

Everyone in the room was on edge as they eagerly waited for Caskets to enter the stage, from the moment they appeared, it was clear that they were here on a mission to leave a statement on Melbourne’s metalcore scene. Lead singer Matt Flood tells us about their song ‘Only Ones‘ and how much it means to him, he then pours his heart out while he sings it which resonated with the audience so much that I even found myself singing along.

Matt wasn’t the only one who demanded attention as their guitarist Craig Robinson decided to go crowd surfing during ‘Guiding Light‘. There are not many bands that make me take my Loop ear buds out (safety first kids) but god dam am I happy I did because seeing Caskets live and not getting the full audio experience wasn’t on the agenda for that night.

They may have only been down under with Windwaker last year, but Caskets have certainly made a name (and home) for themselves in Australia, especially following the release of their latest album Reflections.
