Wednesday 13 is certainly no stranger to Aussie shores and has brought his goth-rock performance a number of times, including most recently at Glam Fest in January this year after releasing new record Horrifier. However, many of you may remember a very special project called Murderdolls.
Murderdolls were admired by many, stood up by Wednesday 13 (on vocals) and no other than the late Joey Jordison (on guitar), known dearly from his iconic drumming for Slipknot who is sorely missed after being taken far too soon. Together, Wednesday and Jordison created the happiest and fun-loving horror music you could ever imagine. Murderdolls released two renowned records, starting in 2002 with debut album Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls and later releasing Women And Children Last in 2010.
As you hum to yourself the 'Summertime Suicide' chorus, I want to share a story from back at Soundwave 2011, where Murderdolls played while Jordison was on double-duties as Slipknot headlined alongside System Of A Down. I was living in Perth at the time and finally witnessed Murderdolls play live, which I knew in my soul would be a rare experience.
The set ignited all the endorphins a heavy music fanatic could imagine, including a the most rock n' roll moment where Jordison lost his temper by the way his untuned guitar setting set off his tinnitus, as I had read about prior from a January, 2021 performance in Bordeaux, France.
I digress, it's after Jordison passed that I realised how lucky I was to see their performance as I thought I'd never experience anything like it again; and I was right, until now. Wednesday 13 and his current band, including Murderdolls/Wednesday 13 instrumentalists Roman Surman and Jack Tankersley will head to Australia in February, 2023 to play all the classics from the two albums. I can't help but think that it's genuinely something that would have made Jordison smile. The best part of all - it's being presented by The Phoenix for a 'full-circle moment'.
On the upcoming tour, Wednesday 13 comments:
“After 21 years since its release, and the recent sad and premature passing of Joey, it only feels right to go out and celebrate these songs. We made two amazing albums that I was very proud of, and unfortunately much of the world didn’t get a chance to hear the songs live. In 2018, we all got together at Joey’s house and discussed plans and possibilities for the future, but we both had other immediate plans, We will be performing tracks from both Murderdolls albums on this upcoming tour and celebrating the legacy of the band.”
