It's been four long years since the rebooted R18+ rated Mortal Kombat movie hit Aussie cinemas, resetting all we knew and loved about the video game-turned-movie franchise.
Now, the ante is upped yet again for the second outing, Mortal Kombat II, which comes out swinging with more blood, gore-ious fatalities and a cavalcade of new and returning characters on-screen for the next film - which is set for release in Australia on October 23rd via New Line Cinema.
Enter Karl Urban as Johnny Cage - the fast talking washed up actor who has been chosen to compete in Mortal Kombat - a centuries old fighting tournament held between the realms alongside previously introduced characters Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Lui Kang (Ludi Lin), Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), and Australia's very own Josh Lawson as Kano - who stole the show in the first flick.
Motral Kombat II also introduces new characters from the popular fighting franchise including Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Quan Chi (Damon Herriman), Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) and the highly anticipated return the screen for Baraka - last seen in the 1997 flop-fest Mortal Kombat: Annihilation - which painstakingly ruined the original 90s run of films with some of the worst dialogue and CGI comprehendible.
The synopsis reads:
"This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders. Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, with Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion."
Time will tell if this new entry lives up to expectations, but given how terrible the last second film was, it won't take much to right the wrongs of the past.
