Kat Moss - Scowl: 7 Fierce Females Shaping the Future of Hardcore // Punk

Throughout the decade WoS has been operating, there's been a significant change in the music scene where a term such as "Female Fronted" has all but ceased being used to describe a band, instead letting the music and messaging do the talking - or screaming.

The profound acceptance and encouragement of women and non-binary folk in the alternative scene has resulted in an influx of new and emerging bands cutting their teeth in a once male dominated landscape and they're not taking any shit from anyone in their path, as they scream loudly and proudly about struggles they've faced in both their music and realoty.

One of those new bands paving the path forward is Santa Cruz hardcore punks Scowl, who just released their new album Are We All Angels and are fast becoming a staple across both the hardcore and punk scenes.

Lead by the fierce Katrina Moss, the outfit's statement pieces with recent singles like 'Special', 'Not Hell, Not Heaven' and 'Tonight (I'm Afraid)' - even throwing back to 'Shot Down' from their Psychic Dance Routine EP - all showcase a force to be reckoned with, with Kat's delivery guiding us on a path of welcoming beauty, before dragging us to the depths of hell with grotesque gutturals that'll certainly get even the harshest of critics listening.

As Scowl continue to rise up the ranks, we asked Kat to throw it back to some of her personal fav fierce females in the scene who are shaping the future of hardcore // punk - and you better listen up!

Sara G of Lockslip/Entry

Best stage presence and genuinely insane vocals. One of my favorite front people to watch due to her ‘maniac-state’ on stage.

Steph Jerkova of Punitive Damage

Vocals are unparalleled to anything I’ve heard before. She spits rage in a flurry of incredible lyrics and her anger stretches beyond her physical form. It feels like pure energy just sharing the room with Steph.

Kat Madeira of Jivebomb

It’s clear as day that Kat is having the time of her life and it’s infectious. Her vocals are terrifying and grimey.

Cloe Madonna of Destiny Bond

Cloe embodies an extraordinary level of charisma on and off stage. I love every word she says and how she says it, there’s always a little bit of melody tinged on her cadence and I find it breathtaking.

Crystal Pak of Initiate

Crystal is a powerhouse like no-other, she performs almost as if it’s a finely detailed workout. Crystal is precise in her rage, she knows exactly when and how to cut deep and it’s awe-inspiring to watch.

Leah Massey of Pest Control

Leah is carefully carving out a space for herself blessed with her blood, sweat, and snarls. Every time I have the pleasure to be around Leah and/or watch her channel thrash metal magic it’s a riot. She knows how to inject herself into any room she plays and soaks up every bit of it.

Emma Boster of Dying Wish

Emma sets the standard on how to propel herself into every corner and crevice of a room. Whether it’s a vets' hall, small DIY space, or massive stage, she owns every inch of it. Always with a smile on her face, she unleashes so much gory beauty in every moment that she holds the microphone.

Now you're up to speed, make sure to hook into Scowl and their latest offering - stat!
