They (the all-seeing mosh gods, I assume) do say that good things come to those who wait, and Melbourne emo-punk outfit Bukowski sure know how to keep us checking our watches. Today we finally get to stop counting because the four-piece makes a blistering return thanks to punchy new single 'one hundred seconds'.Don’t worry, I won’t judge you if you also have to do the math four times to realise that the track does, in fact, take exactly 100 seconds to enjoy in its entirety (unless like me, you just keep playing it over and over, and suddenly an hour has passed and we’re all still sitting here, in the same spot). The last time we heard from Bukowski they were dropping 'Elevator Song' all the way back in 2021. We described that one as a tune that “combines sad, emotive lyrics with intricate layers of soft rock melodies that’s sure to pull at your heartstrings”, and while 'one hundred seconds' might feel more like Bukowski are punching you in the face, they’re really aiming for your gut.The energy is relentless, the four-piece squeezing every ounce of ferocity and blistering melody they can get from their one minute, forty seconds in your ears. Holding things down at the front is someone you might be familiar with, these vocals come straight from James“Bassy” Karagiozis (who you might know from Between You and Me – clearly the dude is BUSY!).
“The lyrics just flowed out - maybe it had something to do with the headspace I was in at the time,” shares Karagiozis. “I was questioning everything, wondering if I was truly living or just existing. Looking back, I think it was a subliminal message to myself - a call to grab life by the horns and experience it to the fullest. Whatever that means for you, go for it, head first!”.
Whether this is the first time you’re meeting Bukowski, or like us you’ve been eagerly awaiting another tasty little tune, the good news is that the band are promising that 'one hundred seconds' is just the beginning. So, expect more releases and news before the year is up! Fingers crossed there might be a follow up to their 2017 debut EP Grow Up. Give Up. Let Go. in the works!Review by Gloria Brancatisano
