Sam Carter Talks Disapproval Of Shooey Chants: "I'm Just Gonna Fucking Ignore It Now"

Shooeys. They started as something fun which later turned into a shameful and embarrassing experience for the rest of us trying to watch a great national or international band performing on stage. The relentless shouting/fad may seem cool to a bunch of bogans stuck in the past, but imagine if you're on stage, after flying hours upon hours to Australia to perform and you already have personal issues with being up on stage prior to having that shouted at you!

Well, Sam Carter of Architects sat down with Wall of Sound's Browny for a discussion about it with UNIFY TV at UNIFY Gathering 2020 and, as we already knew, he's not a fan and has revealed he's not going to even joke about the subject matter anymore when the band come back to Australia:

"The day before (UNIFY Gathering) I was like, ok it's gonna happen, they're gonna shout it and I just to the point of it now where I'm just gonna fucking ignore it now. Like I've done the jokes where people think like I'm gonna drink it and then I'm like fuck off, but there's just no point."

Sam added some clarity to his reasoning for not wanting to take part in the gesture by offering an insight into what goes on in his head while he's on stage performing and hopefully, this'll stick so you'll think twice about calling for one again, for any artist:

"One thing; that people need to understand with it is, you may look like you're really comfortable on a stage, but sometimes people really struggle in those situations... and things like that can really throw you."

"I'm talking about important stuff, I'm not here to drink out of a shoe, I'm here to play our songs!" - Sam Carter on why he'll never take part in a shooey call

The moment for me where I realised that I HATED the fad was when Architects played UNIFY Gathering 2018 and while Sam was pouring his heart out on stage, talking about how the band had moved on following guitarist Tom Searle's tragic passing, the chants started and you could see he was visibly upset trying to talk about something seriously personal to the band that many fans were affected by as well, and all you could hear was a battle between those calling out for one and those trying to get those immature asshats to shut up. I've had my say on the matter (revisit that Op:Ed piece here) and now, it's up to you and your mates to end the chanting now and for good.

It's had it's moment, now let's go back to just enjoying a live show like the good old days. Suss out the interview below and take a look back at Architects headlining Day 1 of UNIFY Gathering via our festival coverage here!
