Get a Sugar Hit With Teenage Joan's New Single 'Candy Apple'
It is always sweet when Adelaide indie-rock duo Teenage Joans release new music and lucky for us, it’s time for a sugar hit. Not only have the duo dropped their latest single ‘Candy Apple’ but it comes with an announcement that they will be releasing their debut album The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest this October.
Inspired by the pop-punk sound of Blink 182 and Paramore, along with other Aussie acts such as Camp Cope, Waax and Tired Lion, these indie darlings have been taking over every room they play in. Since 2018, Teenage Joans have been taking out awards and releasing banger after banger, with this year propelling them even further in the hearts and minds of audiences across the country. Appearing at Groovin’ the Moo and headlining the Adelaide leg of UNIFY Off the Record, the news of a debut album shows that they have no intentions of slowing down.
The lyrically intimate new single ‘Candy Apple’ is vulnerable but catchy. It is sonically sweet but has bite. Even though it seems to follow a classic pop-infused indie-rock formula, there is an element that makes it so signature Teenage Joans. It has a melancholic edge that comes from experiencing the feelings of young heartache and truly encapsulates what it means to grow up through a breakup.
"Candy Apple was our first introduction into writing songs with a way more honest and personal lyric style. When we wrote it we kind of knew it would point us in a new direction for this new era, as we think it definitely shows our maturity,” the band shared.
If ‘Candy Apple’ is giving us a taste of what is to come for this young band, The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest is set to defy expectations.
“This is Teenage Joans in its purest form,” vocalist and guitarist Chali Blakers states, pointing out that “there’s no co-writes on this album, it’s all us”.
Vocalist and drummer Tahlia Borg adds, “our music has evolved so much, and all of our different inspirations have come together into this one little baby – our little baby."
The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest will be out through the label Domestic La La on Friday the 13th of October of this year.
