Behold, the trailer for Queen's Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody!
The Queen/Freddie Mercury biographical movie Bohemian Rhapsody! was riddled with drama from the get-go, but now it finally has it's official trailer released and (not) surprisingly, it looks bloody brilliant. Back in 2010 Sacha Baron Cohen was originally tipped to play the late frontman but due to creative differences with the band's original members Brian May and Roger Taylor, he dropped out in 2013 and now that role went to Mr. Robot's Rami Malek whose previous roles have included appearances in Twilight, Battleship and Night At The Museum 2, but don't let that stop you, his performance looks incredible from what we've seen so far in the trailer.
In 2017 X-Men director Bryan Singer was fired from the movie due to "unexpected unavailability" amidst rumours of creative differences with lead actor Rami Malek which were later denied by Singer. Dexter Fletcher stepped into direct and finally we are merely months away from release.
The plot states:
"Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day."
The remaining members of the band will be played by Ben Hardy (Roger Taylor), Gwilym Lee (Brian May) and Joseph Mazzello (John Deacon). Early drafts of the film depicted Freddie's death in the middle of the movie and following this, how the rest of the band moved on without him. While I get where the remaining members are coming from with this approach, the focus should entirely be on the rise and demise of Mercury fronting the band. Although Queen didn't die/retire or disband following his passing, no one has been able to replicate or replace the legend that was.
Bohemian Rhapsody! is scheduled for release in Australia in November 1st
