Spanish Love Songs Leave No Doubt On New Single ‘Clean-Up Crew’
Jaded but joyful, Spanish Love Songs leave a lasting impression on their emotive new single, ‘Clean-Up Crew’. The band speaks to things both bitter and beautiful, reaching the audience with a measured blend of melodic angst and gutsy rock.
Since rising from various ashes of the Los Angeles, Californian scene in 2014, Spanish Love Songs has thrived on a youthful ethos of garage glory; balancing self-serious maturity with capricious chaos, heartfelt refrains and spoken-word secrets carry this charismatic voice onwards and upwards.
On ‘Clean-Up Crew’, a sense of reckless-abandon clashes with focused intention. Sonically, there’s nostalgia in the vocal cadence, stadium drums, etc. but the emotions of the present moment shine through, fierce and fantastic. Featuring different permutations of a simple, driving rock beat, this number illustrates how smoothly the band can glide between Doors-style stretches of spunk and grit, and the introspective, melancholic musings of Movements, Grayscale, and beyond. The intro, cut n’ dry, contrasts wonderfully with the tunes’ measured, watercolour chorus–a melody bound to move you.
On the single, Dylan Slocum comments:
“It feels like my entire life has been spent on the cusp of something. I wanted to play baseball as a kid, and then I went to college and got hurt. I went to Hollywood to do film and TV and got pretty close. The band has gone beyond our wildest dreams, but at some point, you get tired of chasing after your dreams. The song is me taking a step back and asking, ‘Can we handle a small life? Could we give it up and move to the middle of nowhere and not worry about chasing some dream?’ To me, that’s death.”
Flourishing in the new year, Spanish Love Songs have been relentless, dropping their Doom and Gloom Sessions EP, now ‘Clean-Up Crew’ and its predecessor, ‘Haunted’, both of which will be featured on the upcoming full-length, No Joy, out August 25 via Pure Noise Records.
