Windwaker Get To Know Caskets

Okay, so Windwaker is bringing over Caskets (UK) in July for the Love In The Dark Tour, and we thought they should play a little get-to-know-you with the Brits. If you weren’t already excited for the tour, reading this interview and getting a further glimpse into Windy’s support band will surely get you going! They sound like a lovely bunch of lads.

Have a read of Windwaker’s questions to Caskets and buy your tickets for the tour straight afterwards!

Is this everyone’s first time visiting Australia? Is there anything you’re looking forward to experiencing or trying for your first time here?

Yeah, this is actually our first time visiting Australia as a band! We’re incredibly excited to explore this beautiful country and immerse ourselves in the Aussie culture. There are so many things we’re looking forward to experiencing for the first time: the wildlife, the beaches and of course, taking in the stunning natural landscapes. It’s going to be an adventure, and we can’t wait to create some unforgettable memories down under!

You’ve toured the US and EU extensively, have you noticed a difference in the way audiences interact with you at shows? Any advice for a band travelling to play there for the first time?

Absolutely, there are definitely some differences in the way audiences interact with us in the US and EU. In our experience, US audiences tend to be incredibly energetic and enthusiastic. They love to sing along, jump, and mosh to our music. The energy is infectious! And, of course, they absolutely adore it when meeting you at the merch desk or the bar. They also love shots!

European audiences are quite similar in the sense of the energy at the shows; however, it totally depends whereabouts in Europe. Some cities are more focused on the music itself, showing their appreciation through attentive listening and passionate singing along.

As for advice for a band travelling to play in the US or EU for the first time, we’d say it’s important to connect with your audience on a personal level. Engage with them, make them feel involved, and create a memorable experience for everyone. Also, be prepared for the cultural differences and adapt accordingly. Each region has its own unique music scene and fan expectations, so take the time to understand and appreciate those differences. And most importantly, have fun! Touring in different countries is an incredible opportunity, so embrace the adventure and enjoy every moment of it.

Are there any Australian “delicacies” or traditions you’ve heard about that sound questionable, but you’re interested in trying?

We toured with Thornhill last year so we’ve definitely heard about some interesting Australian “delicacies”! We have quite a few veggies in the band so I think we’ll be skipping the witchetty grub and kangaroo, but we’ve heard great things about Vegemite and something to do with a frog in a pond?!

Translate this phrase to proper English as best you can:

“Was walking to Bunnings in me thongs to grab a sausage sanga and some cobba in a Ute nearly took me out. Ate shit on the concrete and popped a plugger, spewin.”

Jeez! We thought we had slang in Yorkshire! Okay here we go”

“I was walking to Bunnings (Can only presume this is some sort of grocery store) in my flip flops (we know this one) to get a sausage sandwich when someone in a van? Nearly knocked me over. Fell over onto the pavement and (did something to my knee?) Well angry!”

That’s our best guess!?

Best bands (past or present) to come out of Australia in your opinion?

Oh man, there’s something in the water down under. So many top tier bands! In my book, Alpha Wolf, Polaris, and The Amity Affliction definitely make the list. Alpha Wolf brings the heavy, in-your-face vibes that get you pumped up and ready to mosh. Polaris, on the other hand, knows how to create those epic, atmospheric moments that send shivers down your spine. The Amity Affliction have just been consistently good, their blend of metalcore and post-hardcore is just pure fire! They’re the real deal, no doubt about it.

What’s your approach to designing a set list/show for your audience?

Our approach is all about creating an unforgettable experience for our audience. We want to take them on a journey, from the heavy-hitting tracks that get them headbanging to the emotional moments that hit them right in the feels.

One of the key factors in designing our set list is considering the audience we’re playing for, especially when we’re touring with other bands. We want to make sure that our set complements the overall vibe of the tour and fits well with the style of the other bands on the bill. It’s all about creating a cohesive and dynamic concert experience that keeps the energy flowing from start to finish.

We also take into account the fan favourites and the songs that resonate the most with our audience. We want to give them what they came for, playing the tracks they know and love, while also throwing in some surprises and maybe even debuting new material if the time is right.

Ultimately, our goal is to create a set list that not only showcases the diversity and depth of our music but also keeps the crowd engaged and entertained throughout the entire show.

Five artists/bands outside of rock and metal that influence you the most in your music?

There are definitely a few of these! We do like to take a lot of inspiration from the electronic and pop world and bring it into our realm, especially on the production front!

The Weeknd: Soulful vocals and atmospheric landscapes just create that immersive and emotive sonic experience which is kind of what I like to think we do.

Billie Eilish: An innovative approach to pop music and fearless exploration of different sounds and styles have been inspiring. Embrace experimentation.

Arctic Lake: Dreamy melodies, haunting soundscapes and pure emotion. Great band!

Hans Zimmer: For the first time we were able to get real strings on the upcoming album and it just transforms the track entirely. We love the idea of telling stories through music and this guy is the king of that!

John Mayer: I think this is mainly from a guitar and song writing point of view. He’s always inspired us in how to structure songs and to add new textures and counter melodies on different instruments to accompany the main vocal melodies

Favourite song from your catalogue (old or new) to play live?

I think currently it’s ‘Lost in Echoes’ for us all. The combination of riffs, melodies and transitions make it a standout song for us. The crowd also goes wild for this song without fail!
