We've been loving the noises coming from Sydney band Heists over the years, and have been dazzled by their releases over the years, including their latest record Troubled Souls from last year, including single 'Memorial'.
The five-piece have been conquering the metalcore stage and are back with a new number called 'Left To Loathe'. We had the privilege to catch up with a couple of the guys to chat all about it and hear what else is in store.
'Left To Loathe' comes about a year after debut album 'Troubled Souls' - how does the single compare to the album sonically?
Sean: This time around I think the rules went out the window. We leaned a lot more into the production side of things, and you can hear all sorts of ripped up samples and percussion and synth layers scattered all throughout the track, which is something we haven't really done to this level before.
Chris also really stepped it up vocally, he’s showing so much more range on ‘Left To Loathe’ than we could have even imagined when we were writing Troubled Souls, both in his screams and clean vocals. All over though, we’re still the same band that fans know us as, there’s big anthemic choruses, heavy riffs and even a signature Heists punk beat, we just have a few more songwriting tools in our arsenal since the album.
There's a big horror vibe to the track, what inspired this?
Chris: The video concept was actually made before the song was written. I had this idea for a short horror tale that had three women, one who was unsuspecting, another that was possessed and trying to warn the first woman and then a demon, with the twist that they were all the same person stuck in a loop.
I liked the idea, so I storyboarded it visually in my head and then sort of wrote the song around the concept. As the song was being recorded we added in a bunch of horror-themed sounds and samples to match the tone of the video, even though we hadn’t actually made the video yet.
How would you describe the sound of this single to fans who haven't heard it yet?
Sean: It’s a big, chunky, metalcore, spin-kick singalong.
What else has Heists got in the pipes after this one? Can we expect a new LP/EP this year or are we just looking at a standalone single?
Chris: This one is just a standalone single but we’re currently working on the next body of work at the moment, so stay tuned!
