Soulfly have announced their new guitarist will be Mike De Leon, formally of Phil Anselmo and The Illegals. No stranger to the Cavalera tribe, De Leon has previously played alongside Max Cavalera’s son, Richie Cavalera, in his band Incite, whose song ‘War Soup’ also features Max as a guest vocalist.
Soulfly have been without a full time guitarist since the departure of Mark Rizzo in 2021. Those fortunate to catch Soulfly at Good Things Festival last December were treated to seeing Fear Factory guitarist and founder Dino Cazares fill in on guitar duties. We caught up with Dino backstage for our latest Digi-mag, discussing how when Max calls in a favour, Dino is ready to roll, especially when it comes to playing in Australia!
As for Mike DeLeon, he’s also a recent visitor to these shores, having toured with Phil Anselmo and The Illegals back in 2019, which included the infamous show at the now-closed Frankies Pizza By The Slice to play a setlist comprised entirely of Pantera classics.
