Will Putney Discusses Producing Aussie Artists And His Wishlist/Bucket List Bands

We recently also had time to kill with sound engineer / mixing master / guitarist Will Putney of the New Jersey outfit as part of our Virtual Hangs series, and boy did we have a good chat.
The most sort after producer in heavy music spoke with Ricky Aarons about the writing and recording process of their biggest record yet, and also elaborated more on the different bands and albums he’s been mixing with lately, as well as who he would love to work with in the future.
Will chimed in on his works with Aussie bands like In Hearts Wake, Northlane and Thy Art Is Murder. You’d think the mastermind would have collaborated virtually with these bands given the geographical limitations, but many of these albums were down prior to COVID:
“We’ve always produced records in person. I’ve flown myself down with a little rig to Australia to work with Northlane and The Amity Affliction... I’ve just [had] initial talks of things like with a band or two there. It’s been a couple years since I’ve recorded in Australia.”
Prior to the pandemic, Putney helped produce iconic metalcore releases like In Hearts Wake‘s album Ark as well as their joint collab Equinox alongside Northlane, and even the iconic Singularity record. Finally, sharing a label with Human Warfare has had the mixer work with Thy Art is Murder across many of their releases, namely Hate, Holy War, Human Target and Dear Desolation.
Given we’re going on three years since Thy Art Is Murder released a record, we had to know whether Putney may be involved in some top secret new music with the Aussie deathcore kings.
“Can’t really comment, other than I’m sure in the future we’ll probably be working together, but I don’t know where or how yet.”
Putney also touched on some of the artists would love to work with and it turns out a scene favourite is high on his wish list:
“I would love to do a Deftones record. They’re just so many people’s favourite band, and this isn’t a shot at Deftones, but on the last few records, I feel like there are these points where I’m like ‘I see the brilliance of the band’, and then there are moments where I’m like, ‘what this could have been'”.
He cares to clarify that he’s certainly not talking downward on this Deftones.
“They’re a great band, even bad Deftones is better than 90% of what’s out there.”
Putney mentioned other bucket list bands he’d love to get down and dirty with:
“I’d love to work with Baroness. I think that band is great and super underrated. They’re just such a ‘band-band’, like they’re just awesome – it’s a such an interesting approach how they live between the genres. They’re definitely on a wish list for me too. I’m a big O’Brother fan. I keep flirting with them about trying to work with them, I really love that band. There’s a lot of mutual respect there and I hope it turns into us in a studio together one day, they’re high on the list for me too.”
