Avril Lavigne’s Pop Punk Comeback is Officially Here with ‘Bite Me’
Ever since Machine Gun Kelly dropped his transitional album Tickets to My Downfall last September, pop punk has been turning heads from all over. Continuing into 2021, we’ve seen some absolute gamechangers for the pop punk scene of late, from newcomers Mod Sun, Kennyhoopla and nothing, nowhere releasing some killer tracks. We’ve even had the OG gang step it up this year to keep up with the everchanging musical landscape, with Canadian pop punkers Simple Plan being the latest to release new music just last week.
However, easily the most anticipated release of the year has been the onset of new music from the OG motherfuckin’ princess Avril Lavigne. Ever since we caught up with music producer John Feldmann last December where he exclusively revealed that there was a new Avril record in the works, you, me and everyone we literally know has kept close tabs on when those songs would surface. The self-proclaimed pop punk princess then continued to tease her return when she featured on ‘Flames’ alongside her actual beau and current “flame” Mod Sun in January this year.
But the wait is finally over — she’s officially signed to Travis Barker’s DTA Records and just released her first new track since 2019’s release, Head Above Water. ‘Bite Me’ marks Avril’s first official single under DTA Records and is an all-star collaboration, written and produced by Feldmann, Mod Sun, US DJ/producer Marshmello and of course DTA head honcho himself, Barker.
While she’s most definitely had a few hits over the years (‘What the Hell’ and ‘Smile’), ‘Bite Me’ is actually the pop punk comeback we’ve been waiting from Avril since she released The Best Damn Thing in 2007. Drawing us in with a punchy 2000s pop rock hook and a bouncy chorus that’s as sugary sweet as anything you heard from the aforementioned, this track is OG Avril to the core. It’s straight up nostalgia at its finest, and I’m already hitting that repeat button tenfold.
Welcome back Avril. This is the best damn lead single she’s revealed since ‘Girlfriend’ and if you think otherwise, you can… BITE ME.
