Underoath Deliver Haunting Third Single ‘Pneumonia’

You know the band, you know the deal – another new song to tide us over for the next few months until their forthcoming seventh studio album Voyeurist is unleashed upon the world on January 14, 2022…

But don’t let that get in the way of the good time that is ‘Pneumonia‘, the brand spankin’ new song from Underoath which kicks off on the slower end of the spectrum compared to the first two high energy releases ‘Damn Excuses‘ and ‘Hallelujah‘. Focusing on drummer/clean vocalist Aaron Gillespie‘s melodic performances, it’s a slow-jam, balladesque journey that also serves as the album’s closing track. But don’t let that throw you off, throughout the song’s 7 minutes and 12 seconds, we’re treated to both the lighter side of instrumentals and the crushing blows of the haunting climax featuring frontman Spencer Chamberlain‘s screams that opens your eyes and proves why it’s worthy of the album’s closer position (without having heard the rest of the album yet).

Pneumonia‘ was partly inspired by the passing of guitarist Tim McTague’s father, which he elaborated on when discussing the conception:

“We started writing the song, randomly, on the anniversary of my dad’s death, and to release it exactly a year from that day is wild. I was in a funk and wanted to make something sad but felt drained. The song ended up becoming an audible journey of death and is called ‘Pneumonia’ because that is what was listed on my dad’s death certificate. It’s also the only song in the history of the band that Spencer and Aaron sat someone down and asked them (me) to help write some of the lyrics, which was truly an honor.”
