Thornhill Northcote Social Club, Melbourne VIC April 27th, 2019 Supports: Reactions, Diamond Construct and Weighbridge
It’s no surprise that Thornhill were able to sell out the Northcote Social Club, the first show of the nation-wide ‘Coven’ tour as they are on the rise as being one of Melbourne’s most promising heavy bands. With an ever-growing fan base, it’s only a matter of time before this five-piece conquer the world as they have already started doing so at home in Australia.
I entered the half-full venue to the captivating sounds of Weighbridge. I was instantly drawn to their charismatic stage presence which seemingly entranced the entire crowd. For a band who only played their first ever show at the beginning of this year their professionalism was outstanding. Next up was the incredible Diamond Construct, these guys blew me away the second they began playing. The way these guys interact with the crowd is phenomenal to watch. Pulling together the nights first and only wall of death and to have the entire crowd violently headbanging while playing in sync and seemingly without missing a note was very commendable. Their debut self-titled album set to be released on May 17th so make sure you give that a listen once it’s out.
Next act to take to the stage was Reactions, who had the crowd in the palm of their hands as they began playing their aggressive hardcore sound. The crowd responded really well to these guys, producing a huge mosh pit and having numerous people two-step. They managed to make this a really fun and enjoyable set as they were really on the ball in every aspect. Now with the crowd chanting “Thorny, Thorny, Thorny” it was finally it was time for Thornhill’s set, the venue suddenly began packed within a matter of minutes. The night’s biggest mosh pit opened up as opening track ‘Parasite’ began to play. These guys definitely know a thing or two about putting on a show as they had basically every member of the audience on their feet, moving around with smiles everywhere I looked. This band constantly seems to have an admirable amount of enthusiasm during their sets which always seems to translate well to the crowd who is mesmerized by their every move. With the nine-song long set (including encore) the crowd couldn’t get enough as the “Thorny, Thorny” chants engulfed the venue.
It seems there is nowhere to go but up for Thornhill as they continue to go from strength to strength with each release and tour. With the direction they are headed in it’s only a matter of time before they become one of Australia’s finest exports in the heavy music scene and their journey to the top is a pleasure to watch.
