There are a lot of great things to come out of Adelaide. The Adelaide Fringe, the Adelaide Crows, and the Barossa Valley vineyard to name a few. Another great thing that’s come out of Adelaide is theatrical emo/punk-rock quintet Wolf & Chain. Their debut EP An Honest Mistake is out now and some of their influences include the Pixies and Queen, and the band are getting regular play on Triple J Unearthed, as well as from Idobi Radio in the US.

The opening track of the EP is ‘An Honest Mistake’ and as soon as it starts I personally get My Chemical Romance and Ice Nine Kills vibes and I’m not at all mad about it. It’s a great way to kick of an album and is full of energy, great lyrics, and awesome instrumentals. Vocalist Jack Cumes has a great range to his vocals, as well as really good pitch and tone. His changes from clean to slightly screamed vocals come across as effortless too. Track 2 is ‘Murder Song’ and the guitar and drum intro is really tight and initially gave me a little bit of a ‘Dance Dance’ by Fall Out Boy vibe and I was hooked. The breakdown kicks in about halfway through the track and the heavy guitars, bass and drums totally change the vibe of the track in a really cool way. The ending may also surprise some people so I’d recommend giving it a listen.

‘Repent’ is track 3 and opens with Jack Cumes talking directly to the listeners and breaking the fourth wall a little bit, and if you don’t know what I mean think Gerard Way at the start of The Black Parade. The music is a little bit circus-like during the intro before the track really kicks off. The bass work of Harry Charles-Britton is worth mentioning here because it’s really one of the highlights of the track. I definitely think that this is my favourite track on the EP and there is a lot I could say about it, but I really do recommend that people just listen to it. Best track on An Honest Mistake in my opinion! Track 4 is simple titled ‘Interlude’ and the best way I can describe it is an epic journey with storytelling, deep emotion and a wide variety of instrumentals that will make you want to go on a huge adventure. I know I went on an adventure musically while listening to this one! The final track on An Honest Mistake is ‘Killer’ and it’s vastly different from the previous track and is heavy af. Definitely made me think of Ice Nine Kills with this one and it’s a great way to round out a great EP.

Wolf & Chain have hit the ground running HARD with this EP and if they’re already this good with their debut EP, the only way is up for them! Hauntingly and artistically beautiful, An Honest Mistake is really going to get people talking and excited about this Adelaide 5 piece!
