The Butterfly Effect
The Forum, Melbourne VIC
August 31st, 2019

Chaos theory stipulates that a change in a complex structure can lead to larger changes elsewhere, similar to an environmental shift. In 2012, vocalist Clint Boge announced his intentions to depart The Butterfly Effect, which came as a huge shock to their fans and the Australian music community and led to uncertainty for the band’s future. However, much like the theory they are named after, in the years since the split, small changes have led to larger ones elsewhere, eventually allowing for The Butterfly Effect to undergo a transformation which has resulted in an original line-up reunion, and the promise of more new music on the horizon, following the release of their latest single 'UnBroken'.

After a small, but completely sold-out 2018 reunion tour, tonight The Butterfly Effect were back in Melbourne to showcase some new material and deliver a blistering showcase of music from their legendary back-catalogue. The setlist touched on each of the band’s albums, with 'A Slow Descent', 'Gone' and 'Crave' being particularly incredible live. New song 'UnBroken' felt like a suitable addition to the set, perhaps named in honour of their return to the live scene, while an encore of 'World on Fire' and 'Room Without A View' closed tonight’s epic performance with a huge amount of energy and passion.

Truth be told, when I attended the band’s final performance at the Hi-Fi Bar in 2012, I thought that I would never get the opportunity to see this band ever again. It may have taken The Butterfly Effect eleven years to get themselves back on track with writing new material, but the wait was well and truly worth it. The band sounded incredible tonight while performing, but more importantly, they looked genuinely happy doing so too. Welcome back, guys!
