I learnt a lot of valuable lessons during Panic! At The Disco's set last night. The main one being that you can stand far enough away from the amps to not need ear plugs but you can never escape screaming twelve year olds. It's pretty surreal to see a band that you've been following since the days of LiveJournal close enough you could count their pores.
Whilst being one of my favourite bands of all time, I had yet to see them live - shocking, I know. My expectations were high and Panic delivered. Streamers and confetti galore. They opened with "Don't Threaten Me With A Good Time" from their latest album and how Brendon still had enough stamina to keep going for over an hour more is beyond me. I was getting tired just watching him.
If Brendon was a reindeer, his name would be Prancer. I will never be convinced that Brendon Urie is a human entity. His vocal range and energy is literally out of this world. Every high note and falsetto that he nailed, the crowd squealed just as high and twice as loud. I'd love to see an official count of how many of his famous backflips Brendon has done during this Australian tour. Being a really old school fan, I expected to harbour some distain for the touring band replacements but I honestly just had a lot of respect for them and their stage presence.
Dallon Weekes reminded me of Ryan Ross a little so there's extra brownie points. They didn't play a lot off A Fever You Can't Sweat Out which was personally disappointing. However, they did play "Time To Dance" which is perhaps my favourite song of theirs. I could whinge some more about not hearing more of my favourite album but I'll leave it at that.
"Emperor's New Clothes" and "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" were smash hits. Their cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" was a crowd favourite even thought I'm pretty sure 60% of the crowd didn't know Queen. Honestly, I just find that a testament to Panic's popularity. Brendon's vocals on "Death of a Bachelor" were insane, I don't think I will ever hear a vocalist as talented and entertaining as him in my lifetime. I think the best way to review this show would have been to record the crowd's screams because that was one of the most crazed crowds I've ever seen - and I've been to a Lady Gaga show.
