The Princess Theatre, Meanjin/Brisbane QLD
January 20, 2024

Punk is not dead!!
First gig of the year for me and hell if it wasn’t a good one!
If you didn’t know supergroup OFF! have been touring around Australia and NZ the last couple of weeks for their ‘Free LSD’ Tour. I did my usual pilgrimage up to Brisbane to check them out.
Slowly but surely I am making my rounds through the list of awesome Brisbane music venues and the Princess Theatre is one of them. It was my first visit there and I have to say pretty impressed by a lot of things but most of all – AIR CONDITIONING!!
Some fun facts about the Princess Theatre. Heritage listed, it is Queensland’s oldest standing theatre. The building opened in 1888 and during that time has been home to a host of different business and groups including a community hall, a picture theatre, a rag merchant, a secondhand dealer, a factory and a church. In 2020 was sold again, refurbished and turned into the venue we see today.
Enough history, onto the good stuff!
First up on the bill were Brisbane based band Mitch Please!. It’s not my first time shooting this band and its always a great show. The way vocalist Polly Armstrong switches between her soft and pretty vocals and the raging roar of her heavy vocals is pretty awesome. The contrast between the two really reaches out and grabs you.
The band released their debut album back in 2020 and continue smash it out with new music, a top performance with some pretty impressive support gigs like the Regurgitator 25 Years of Units festival held in Brisbane last year.
Next up we had Sydney-based Party Dozen. I’d never heard of this band before and I was totally blown away by how great they were. Only a simple duo with a saxophone and a mic but it was something out of the box and something special. I love a band that pushes boundaries and experiments in different ways, making it a huge point of difference and unquiet.
Drummer Jonathan Boulet smashed the drums while vocalist and sax legend Kirsty Tickle bounced from one side of the stage to the other, swapping between playing the sax and using it for vocals.
Now I’m no musician, I don’t always understand the technical side of things but however Kirsty was doing it – seeing someone sing into a sax was pretty damn awesome. I’d keep my eye on this band – hopefully they come back this way soon!
Now on to the main show, the part of the night everyone has been waiting for – the headliner. And tonight it was OFF! The room by now was filled with excited fans and I will say it every time the anticipation just before the headliner comes on is one of my favourite times at a gig. It’s like kids waiting for Santa to arrive.
Im fairly certain the majority of our local punk scene was at this show – familiar faces dotted right, left and centre. It was just all us old rockers hanging out of the punk show – I was pleasantly surprised at the range of ages and types of people that came to watch a band they loved.
OFF! were born in Los Angeles back in 2009, the brainchild of Circle Jerks/Black Flag member Keith Morris. The band has evolved and changed faces a little over the years but they still pulled a massive crowd with a huge fan base of young and old, and deliver top notch show.
I was told to expect a stellar live show and I was not disappointed. When playing the old favs, the crowd screamed the words and danced and moshed their heads off. There were circle pits, body slamming and everyone just having a ball.
Im sure it won’t be too long till OFF! return down under and when they do make sure you go and see them live. I promise you won’t regret it!
