What a way to kick off 2019 at the iconic Sydney Opera House for the Stairway To Heaven show by the Led Zeppelin Masters accompanied by the Sydney Orchestra. With the fireworks over and the new year just beginning, walking along the harbour foreshore where only a few nights ago several thousand watched as Sydney welcomed the New Year, little did I know of the show I was about to witness.
We all know Led Zeppelin, we have all seen a “tribute” band or show before but never have I seen one with a 30 piece Orchestra. Waiting in the Concert Hall of the beautiful Opera House watching the members take their places in the Orchestra pit you could feel something in the air and it was buzzing. Opening with an orchestral number transitioning into 'Good Times Bad Times', it set the pace and standard for the evening and I can assure you there were no “bad times” tonight.
With Vince Contarino on vocals and Tzan Niko on guitar, you could close your eyes and it was Page and Plant firing on all cylinders back in the day, the way the Zep Boys and Black Dog Orchestra have arranged the classics is simply amazing and to hear Zep with an orchestra is damn near perfection. Closing the first “act” with 'Rock and Roll', Vince encouraged attendees to get up and dance and dance they did, to see people dancing to the song in the aisles of the Opera House was brilliant to witness. After a short intermission in which according to Contarino they'd be doing some “cocaine”, the lights went down and a single violin player bathed in red light let loose and shredded away on the instrument like I've never seen which led into 'Kashmir', a well-received crowd favourite.
Playing all the classics including 'Moby Dick', 'Going To California' and of course the iconic 'Stairway' the night came to an end with the encore of 'Immigrant Song' and 'Whole Lotta Love'.
As I said earlier, “what a way to kick off 2019”
