KarnivoolPier Bandroom, Frankston VICMay 31st, 2024 Support: Sleep TalkIf there's one thing that you can count on, it's that where there's live music, Melbourne music fans will show up. As was the case at the Pier Bandroom in Frankston on a chilly Friday night for Perth's favourite prog band, Karnivool, with support from Adelaide five-piece Sleep Talk. The Bandroom is one of the most iconic venues in Frankston, boasting performances from bands like The Bennies, Jebediah, You Am I and The Amity Affliction, as well as a rotating dance floor! It's located right by the beach and about an hour away from Melbourne CBD, but that didn't stop it being a sell out show. The venue itself was buzzing from the moment it opened and that momentum continued as Sleep Talk took to the stage. The boys from Adelaide have quite a different vibe from Karnivool, being more on the hardcore end of the rock scale. The crowd were very much into the boys though, and they threw a high-energy 45-minute set at us. The cool thing about the Pier Bandroom is that the stage is a little small, which means that you're up close and personal with the performers and it was clear to see that the RAdelaide boys were enjoying themselves and the crowd enjoyed them. Now the thing about Karnivool is that it's been roughly 10 years since they released any new music. Asymmetry is the band's most recent album, and it came out way back in 2013. Despite the long gap between releases, Karnivool have been touring non-stop in recent years, not only in Australia, but across Europe and Asia as well. It may have a little bit to do with singer Ian Kenny being in another highly successful band that you might have heard of, Birds Of Tokyo, but us Vooligans know that Kenny is just as dedicated to us. Which is why despite it being so long since music has come out, we always show up to support our favourite group. The thing about Vooligans is that we are always loud when the guys hit the stage, and Friday night was no exception. There were several times when Kenny took out his in ears so he could her the crowd singing, even taking the time to say that it sound liked '10 thousand people were singing' at him.Anyone that's ever been to a live show knows that someone in the band will tell you 'You guys are the loudest city/show/crowd on tour!' or something to that effect, Kenny acknowledged this but still told us that we were the loudest crowd of the tour so far. Without the knowledge of what other crowds did sound like, there were several times during the show where we couldn't hear Kenny, but we could hear the sold out venue singing all the lyrics.Kenny, Drew Goddard, Jon Stockman, Steve Judd and Mark 'Hoss' Hosking put on an incredible 90 minute set, playing songs from all 3 of their albums, as well as a couple of new songs, and teased that there was more to come. Personally, as someone who's been a Vooligan for the last 10ish years, I think it was one of the best performances I've ever seen from them, and regardless of whether new music comes out between now and then, I'll be at the next show ready to do it all over again.Review by Kelsey Trevan.
