If you're a Hardcore or Black Metal fan, have you ever wondered what it would sound like to smash elements of these genres together and mix in some Doom and Sludge? If you (like me) are sadly not acquainted with the Danish band HEXIS, and you answered yes to the above question – then you need to give this band a listen ASAP. Even if you didn't answer yes, fuck it, just listen! It's worth it, I promise.
I rolled up just as HEXIS took the stage and heard their vocalist (I literally looked everywhere I could think of to find the band members' names but came up short, so please forgive me), telling the venue to turn off every light they could. They even wanted the lights at the bar off, but this couldn't happen. With a dark stage and moshpit, what followed was forty minutes of the heaviest music I've seen in quite a while, with a menacing, unstopping energy that just seemed to hit you like a wall of pulsing noise. The metal vocals never waivered or lost their strength, and together with the wall of noise from the instruments- it was one hell of a set.
This band has done over 900 lives shows since their forming in 2010 in every place you could imagine – including Mongolia! And it shows how their heavy sound forms together to sound and feel like one ethereal, savage being. If you get a chance, don't miss seeing them – wherever you may be in the world.
This was a really fun night- not only was I seeing a rad new band I had only heard of a few weeks before, but I was also going to Bad Luck, Brisbane's newest heavy venue, AND I was having a cute date with one of my partners. Wholesome, heavy, black metal vibes all round.
