Heartline
Jungle Duke, Wagga Wagga NSW
August 30, 2024
Supports: Silver Fang, Artifact, and Everleigh.

The support that the local and regional scene has been receiving has been outstanding this year. Most recently in Wagga, Adelaide’s own Heartline played a sold-out gig with Windwaker, and they had such a good time they just had to return. We’ve wanted them back just as badly, so we were lucky that Heartline ensured Wagga had a stop on their first headline tour across Australia. To help commemorate the release of their EP Pink Lemonade, an equally anticipative lineup hit the stage. Melbourne’s Silver Fang were the touring main supports, alongside locally loved legends in Artifact and the partially Sydney and Wagga-based punk act Everleigh.

I’m generally into the heavier side of music, however Everleigh killed it on stage. I’m not familiar with a lot of their genre, but the encouragement for multiple sing-alongs as well as the vocalist joining the crowd kept things fun. Their catchy songs and set had a healthy mix of upbeat grooves and sad vibes. Any who rocked up early were in for a treat if they caught Everleigh.

Artifact have been such a draw card for local shows as they keep learning together. Their production value shot up by adding a walk-in track to set the tone, and they demonstrated on-the-feet thinking during technical difficulties. When drummer Harvey Saxton lost the click tracks, he and guitarist Hayden Rapley worked together to solve this while vocalist Michael Veneris kept the audience entertained and invested in their set. Once things kicked off again, Michael’s dual vocals with the enchanting Bec Horseman were a feast for the ears. This was also the second stage performance featuring new guitarist Nathan Clarke. The interplays between Nathan and Hayden added an extra dynamic to the band’s live energy, one I’m keen to see develop further.

I have been so fucking keen to see Silver Fang again since I saw them play with Future Static in December of 2022. The wait was worth it, as they have levelled up considerably due to plenty of live shows with some awesome bands. Their electrifying performance set the stage ablaze. Precise drum work from Sarah Cretu drove the energy of the performance, as bassist Luke Sullivan utilised deep grooves to keep things heavy. Jesse Abdurazak’s guitar skills were captivating and exciting, complimenting Stephanie Jessica Rose’s emotive singing and powerful screams. It was clear the band were hyped as fuck to be on the stage as they smashed out fresh tunes off latest EP Labyrinth with a few cheeky unreleased tracks to bounce to. Everyone in attendance got off their feet for Silver Fang’s cover of Missy Elliot’sLose Control‘, a catchy throwback with a healthy dose of heavy. This cohesive show left me wanting more, knowing that the wait to see them again was worth it. Make sure to get in early to see them at Monolith Festival in November.

Heartline were incredible as a support act, but as headliners, they truly owned the stage. Their previous visit left a lasting impression, and they capitalized on that momentum to deliver a powerful set. They performed Pink Lemonade in its entirety, along with fan favourites like ‘Crystal Eyes‘ and ‘Under the Willow‘. Vocalist Luke Taylor captivated the audience with his emotive voice, while bassist Nevenko Sarunic’s intricate bass lines added depth to each song. Drummer Oscar Taylor’s dynamic rhythms kept the energy high, and guitarist George Carey’s electrifying solos brought an extra layer of excitement. The crowd was visibly thrilled, as they bounced around and cheered wildly between songs. The highlight was an unreleased song at the end of the set, which whipped the audience into a frenzy. Fans were on their feet, dancing and shouting for more, clearly energized by the new track. Heartline are clearly cooking up something heavy with this new song, and the audience’s enthusiastic reaction proved it.

Heartline’s unique blend of heavy alternative metalcore draws upon a variety of influences, and that was reflected by a solid lineup construction. Each support contributed different aspects to a gig that Heartline took and shaped into their own tunes and unique performances. It was a pleasure to check out this gig, and a treat to see all the people who travelled to play. If you get the chance, do yourself a favour and catch these guys live.
