The only time I’ve ever seen Filter in the flesh was at the 2014 Soundwave Festival, and like any festival, you spend so much time juggling bands and running between stages, it’s rare that you get to sit through an entire set. I swore if Filter ever returned to our shores that I needed to see them properly, and tonight was that night as they tore through the West for The Algorithm World Tour.
This was my first time at Magnet House so it was cool to see the changes they’ve made to the place. Definitely a much funkier vibe compared to when it was Capital, and there was already a solid crowd in the room ready for the opening act, which was great to see.
I haven’t shot a concert since before Covid bitch slapped the world, and it probably shows because I forgot just often Perth venues don’t turn on the front stage lights. Gig lighting is the bane of my existence but thankfully I was completely mesmerized by the music as frontman Richard Patrick belted out each song, hitting every scream to perfection. There was a good mix of old and new songs and slight lyric changes in ‘American Cliché’ as Richard sang “Yeah, this is a American cliché, American, American, Fuck Donald Trump” which gave me a chuckle. I loved the candid banter as Richard told the crowd they don’t mosh (at all) like they do in Europe, so some lads in the crowd made up for it for the rest of the show.
I have to admit from shows I’ve been to in Perth we’re not a bouncy lot, and I know bands feed off the crowd but our lack of energy isn’t a reflection of the band, I think we’re just really laid back as concertgoers. Like I want to see the band play, not get beat up in the crowd, but that’s just me. Richard went on to say they don’t believe in encores and making people wait around so they’re just going to play all their songs now, and at the end asked all of us to tell a thousand or so of our closest friends to come to a Filter concert next time they’re in town finishing with “We will see you soon. Promise”.
So you heard it here folks, get your ass to a show next time Filter tour. My review isn’t doing the show any justice; you need to see them for yourself. You won’t regret it! Maybe next time they can play ‘Where Do We Go From Here’ because it was the only song lacking off this setlist that I would have gone mental for – internally of course, because I’m a Perthie!
