Supports: Black Rheno and Burn The Hostages

Eyehategod are on a long overdue return tour of Australia, I caught the third show at Max Watts In Melbourne. Burn The Hostages were the first to take over the stage and kick things off for the night. The Melbournites almost blew the pint right out of my hand with their sheer power and heaviness. The band features Extortion vocalist Rohan Harrison and I Exist guitarist/vocalist Aaron Osbourne so it is no surprise that they would be awesome, however the heavy sludge that they play will tear your face right from your skull. Look out for Burn The Hostages in the future and get onto Bandcamp, Spotify or whatever you use and give them a listen. If you like heavy, heavy sludge then you won’t be disappointed.

Sydney’s Black Rheno are joining EHG on their trip around this big old island and the three-piece were up next. It’s hard to put these guys in a genre box. They combine bits of stoner, doom, punk, sludge, a touch of grind and a whole lot of groove. It’s hard to believe that such a big sound could come from three people, but they were huge! Vocalist Milla made use of every square inch of the stage while guitarist Nano, threw out some very heavy riffs. It’s odd to see a band playing this kind of music without a bass player, but Black Rheno don’t seem to be affected by it.

The lights were low for the main act. It had been a long time coming. The last time the sludge legends were down under was 2012 (though not for want of trying, they were forced to cancel their scheduled 2014 tour days before it was due to start). Nobody seemed to mind though, we were just happy to have them back here. The stage was almost in darkness when the four from New Orleans took the stage and they wasted no time in banging out a bunch of crowd favourites like 'Dixie Whiskey' and 'Sister Fucker'. With over 30 years of experience under their belt, I had expected EHG to be good, but my god, they were amazing. Super heavy, super bluesy and super sludgy. There is no band that makes feedback sound as good as EyeHateGod. I was one of the unlucky ones who missed their last tour and truly thought that I would not see them, I was absolutely thrilled when their tour was announced this time around and they did not disappoint, in fact, they exceed my expectations and I will go out and call it right now, gig of the year! If you are in Newcastle, Sydney or Brisbane, do yourself a favour and get a ticket to their show, call in sick from work if you need to but do it! And thank me later.
