Wow, Edguy celebrate their 25th anniversary this year! I didn’t realise it’s been that long. I remember when Vain Glory Opera came out way back in 1998; a cool album from a band with a funny name. Back then I was heavily into the European power metal scene and could probably name any obscure album from a band you’d never heard of and what label they were on. Admittedly, when Edguy started to take a more rock’n’roll approach, I turned to Tobias Sammet's (vocalist) other band Avantasia for my power metal fill. Yet Edguy powered on with some great albums, continuing with their rock influenced metal, and producing some of the catchiest songs to be written in the genre.
Monuments contains a compilation of 22 best-of tracks and 5 brand new tracks. The album opens with ‘Ravenblack’, a brand new track - you’d probably think that’s a pretty bold move considering this is mostly a best-of album - but…this has to be one of Edguy’s best tracks, ever. The next four new songs don’t drop the ball either, these boys know how to write some solid and fun tracks. Following that is pure nostalgic bliss, and a reminder of what a great band Edguy has been over the past 25 years, and still obviously are! It’s so good to suddenly hear these songs after not hearing them for so long, and some for many years.

Frontman Tobias Sammet: “…we were once again made aware of how proud we are of what we have created. There are probably not many musicians who are lucky enough to be able to look back on a 25-year-old band history at the end of their thirties. And especially without any line-up changes in the last 20 years! But if you look back now, you realise how lucky we were! The first quarter century is over and we want to honour these years with our fans! To the next 25 years!"
If you’ve never heard of Edguy but want some great pumping pick-me-up music, with fun anthem-like choruses, look no further! Personally, I would have loved to have seen a few more songs from the Vain Glory Opera album, but whatever, I can’t complain too much - my favourite Edguy track, ‘Out of Control’ is one here, so all good. I’m going to keep this spinning album through my speakers for at least another 10 rotations. Do yourselves a solid, check this album out!
