Supports: Artifact & Deadskin

Diamond Construct just dropped their killer sophomore album Angel Killer Zero, and what better way to celebrate their unique addition to modern metalcore than hitting the road for some classic scene-era parties at AM//PM Emo Night events! I’ve been following the Gold Coast lads closely lately, and seeing them continue the regional support is f*cking awesome. Before the DJs and headliners took the stage, Wagga Wagga’s metalcore magicians Artifact and Melbourne metallers Deadskin opened the pit.

Deadskin are such a fun band that can jump on any metal lineup. These guys pumped out breakdown after breakdown and roused the early attendees into a frenzy. The headbangers on the barrier rocked out to some new unreleased tracks alongside newer track ‘Neverbloom‘ and my personal favourite ‘K.M.S.Deadskin left a lasting impression with their fast and ferocious style of haunting metalcore. If you like breakdowns and heavy grooves, then you need to get around this band.

Artifact played with Diamond Construct regionally only a couple of months ago, so they understand the assignment and know exactly how to prep an audience for such a high-octane act. I’ve been a day one fan of these guys and it’s always fun to see every little difference at the shows they play. As they tore through a set mostly consisting of their latest EP Insurrection, a higher level of confidence was on display from the entire band. An example is Michael Veneris ensuring he’s present right on the barrier during vocal duties, making certain the growing crowd were involved and going hard. Sick riffs, awesome duo vocals and a nailed guitar solo on ‘Nascent‘, helped to create new fans last night.

Diamond Construct took to the stage during an edited interruption on Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody‘, and launched into our first taste of Angel Killer Zero for the night in ‘Jynx‘. From the get-go, vibes were high as the band had a blast on stage, which was reflected in the pit. The setlist was nice and varied between all prior releases, featuring familiar bops such as the haunting ‘Scythe‘ and catchy as fuck ‘Hypno‘. Everyone knew ‘Hit It Back‘ of course, which I loved to see. Kynan Groundwater pumped the energy up with his tidy screams, cleans and fast raps with precision and professionalism. Angel Killer Zero translated to the stage well, the effects-heavy ‘Neon‘ really shone through. The enthusiasm from the whole band helped to sell this, as they played ‘Hell Inside You‘ and my personal favourite ‘Clickbait‘. I was so f*cking stoked to sing along to this multi-faceted song so soon and I couldn’t be happier. Shouting along to classic DC hit ‘Animus‘ was another highlight of the night. The most aggressively Diamond Construct-sounding track to date ‘You Want That Scene Shit‘ just kept getting heavier and heavier, which roused the audience to a whole new level of action. Braden Groundwater shredded through the set, and the punchy bass and drums of Alex Ford and Liam Newman culminated in set closer ‘Psychosis‘. One last hyperactive hurrah, some circle pits and an enthusiastic final breakdown ensured everyone had a smile on their face.

Diamond Construct have started this album-cycle run of shows in the best way. Hitting up so many dates including regional shows, bringing a certified banger event and awesome support bands to go along with it was the play to make. Seeing some of my favourite new tracks genuinely translate well live is always a great time, and amongst the backdrop of AM//PM Emo Night was the cherry on top.
