Bury Tomorrow
Amplifier Bar, Perth WA
October 13th, 2023
Supports: Liveconformdie and Darkmatter

Only the second time Bury Tomorrow have toured Australia, almost a decade since they were last here, and the first time for Perth. The anticipation in the air was electric, as fans eagerly awaited what would unfold on this long-awaited night.

Darkmatter unsurprisingly opened the night to a packed room. They got straight to business with ‘Claustrophobia’, generating movement throughout the room. Darkmatter made the most of their 25-minutes by tearing through a 7-track setlist and let their music do the talking, with minimal crowd engagement between tracks. Despite being a metric shit tonne heavier than the other bands on the bill, punters were moving, and massive pits opened during the devastating breakdowns. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, these boys go hard.

Another Perth local, Liveconformdie followed. Somehow, despite having been around for 7 or so years, I’ve never seen them. Delivering an eclectic blend of nu-metal, they had the fans rocking their heads to the grooves, singing along to the choruses, pumping fists to dance beats, and throwing down to breakdowns. They laid down a tight performance, with solid stage presence (special mention to the bassist), and the crowd were definitely into it. If you have the opportunity to catch them, I’d say do it.

An unruly roar erupted from the tightly packed crowd as Bury Tomorrow’s logo flashed on screen at the back of the stage and the band appeared. Engaging the crowd instantly, the whole band enticed the room into an overhead hand clap before Daniel Winter-Bates screamed “BOOOLTCUUUTTEEEER”. Every single punter sang their hearts out to ‘Black Flame’, and the pit exploded into a wilderness during ‘Abandon Us’, garnering a “F*ck yeah, that is what I’m talking about!” from Daniel, before he commanded the room to spin around the good old pole in the centre of the Amps pit. Swaths of punters were happy to oblige as the band ripped through ‘Earthbound’.

After a quick chat to the crowd, Daniel displayed some immense crowd control, enticing the entire venue to bounce in unison throughout ‘The Age’. Kristan Dawson flexed his guitar prowess as he shredded through the solo of ‘Man on Fire’ and even continued to play as he crowd surfed around the room. Throwing back to ‘The Union of Crowns’ with ‘Lionheart’ ensured the pit dialled it up to 11 for the crushing breakdowns, and every punter sang the chorus. Fists pumped for ‘LIFE (Paradise Denied)’ and several punters revelled in the opportunity for some stage dives, the band clearly loving it.

Giving the band an opportunity to catch their breath, Daniel spoke about the band’s value of inclusivity and that they want their shows to always be a safe space for everyone, with a little bit of a stab at you know who. After getting the approval from the crowd, he encouraged everyone to put their arms around each other and jump. The room truly lifted and bounced higher than before, together for ‘Begin Again’.

Heretic’ somehow managed to go even harder than the recording, ensuring multiple stage divers and a huge applause. ‘Cannibal’ had the entire venue yelling the lyrics, and furious moshing took place during ‘Choke’. Bury Tomorrow then had a bit of fun with the crowd, making fun of encores and pretending to hide behind mic stands and small towels before closing out the night with ‘DEATH (Even Colder)’. Knowing it was their last chance, punters gave it their all, needing little encouragement from the band. Synchronous hand claps, chaotic circle pits, deafening sing-alongs, hectic moshing and a massive applause showing Bury Tomorrow they’d put on a ripper of a show, and a “We will be back” from Daniel suggesting Perth had impressed.

Bury Tomorrow were on fire, playing a setlist that spanned the majority of their career. They had massive stage presence and played with impressive technical precision. Every single song came alive, the choruses huge and the breakdowns crushing. Australia, you’re in for a treat!
