Between You and Me
170 Russell, Melb VIC
May 17, 2024
Support: Young Culture and Towns
After their first headlining shows in the United States and UK, Between You And Me brought the SH!T YEAH! tour all the way back home with their first stop being 170 Russell in Melbourne. Nostalgia rock two-piece from Adelaide, Towns, kicked off the night with some absolute tunes like ‘Safe to Stay’ – one of my favourites – that got the crowd moving and grooving, even debuting their new song ‘Birthdays’ live which was released in early April.
And all the way from the big apple, pop-punk band, Young Culture hit the stage with a bang! Frontman, Alex Magnan was an absolute ball of energy, bouncing around across the stage as soon as their set started and kept up that their whole set. That energy rubbed off on the crowd who was just equally as into it as the band was especially during songs like ‘Holiday in Vegas’ and ‘Drift’.
As the time neared for Between You And Me to take the stage, 170 Russell became even more packed in with eager fans. Opening with one of their hit songs ‘Dakota’ the crowd grew even more excited for the set that was in store for them for the rest of the night. With the release of their new EP SH!T YEAH which was released in early April of this year, tracks such as ‘Nevermind’, ‘YEAH!’ and ‘In The Middle’ made their first appearances on Australian shores. As if there wasn’t enough wildness on stage with Bassy pulling out the jumps with the bass guitar which was so impressive, the boys were also joined by some special guests including Alex Magnan from Young Culture who came out to perform ‘Kill My Vibe’ as well as Gabe Pietrafesa also from Young Culture who played bass on ‘Deadbeat’ and even the amazing Mikaila Delgado of Yours Truly who came on to perform ‘Go To Hell’! The same vibrant energy followed its way back to the crowd with a small mosh going on as well as crowd surfers. Even vocalists Jake and Bassy came out to the crowd for an intimate singalong moment with everyone standing on the barricades being held up by their loving fans! A surprise cover song made its way onto the setlist because who doesn’t love belting Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’ out as much as Jake did on stage, it’s a classic after all! And what a way to end the night but with ‘Butterflies’!
As someone who hasn’t heard of much of Between You And Me’s music or seen them live before, I had such a pleasure watching them create a unique and fun atmosphere not only for the fans but for themselves too. It was refreshing to see the band was just as pumped to perform as the crowd was to watch and really solidified the passion they have for what they do!
