BASSINTHEGRASS 2019 - Festival Review & Photo Gallery 18th May @ Mindil Beach, Darwin NT
The Top End's biggest (and only) music festival, BASSINTHEGRASS, rolled into town last weekend for its biggest line-up to date. With diverse acts like Hilltop Hoods and Amy Shark getting the chance to bring their current nationwide tours to Darwin as well as Mallrat bringing her cool and quirky pop vibes to the party (who I have to say is way cooler than Billie Eilish will ever be), fans checked into the event dressed in their Hawaiian tropical shirts (yes, I feel like I forgot the memo here) from all over the country to experience a premier event on the Top End's Dry Season calendar. We were there to capture the festivities and some of our favs for you!
Tapestry
Top End locals Tapestry managed to nab a last minute spot on the lineup this year and as Darwin's biggest heavy act, it's no surprise. Despite the early time slot though, the entire heavy metal scene in Darwin got into the event early to support the boys. With songs like 'Dark Shade' and 'Ghost' on the setlist, the crowd was stoked to have some metal vibes to get their day started. To also get the stamp of approval from Karnivool during their set is huge, so these guys are doing something right!
DZ Deathrays
Those legends from Queensland brought the best mosh pit vibes of the whole day with their indie party punk attitudes and the army of Hawaiian shirts in the crowd fit right in here. I swear there was not a foot planted on the ground throughout DZ's entire set. Having never witnessed these guys live before, I was definitely more than impressed.
Karnivool
Perth heavy music legends Karnivool was probably the highlight of the day for anyone that went to Bass for the bands. I definitely redeemed myself this weekend after passing out early at Unify Gathering earlier this year (yeah, my bad!) and missing Karnivool down south. These guys also brought the mosh vibes to the Beachside stage, a nice addition to the majority of pop/indie acts on that stage.
Amy Shark
Okay she's not really rock, but she's collaborated on a song with Mark Hoppus from blink-182, so why wouldn't we cover Amy Shark?! She was a real treat to experience, and right against the backdrop of the best sunset in Australia (which must've been why she was 20 minutes late - she wanted to take in the sunset setting herself!). Not only did she play all of her hit singles, and shook things up, but she added some pop/punk vibes with her cover of Wheatus' 'Teenage Dirtbag' that was loved and adored by the masses.
Despite the lack of rock/guitar driven acts on the line-up this year, BASSINTHEGRASS is a decent music festival that's worth a visit to the Tropical Top End. Just make sure you actually like at least 3 of the artists first. Maybe next year they'll add even more rock bands and less of the indie/pop/electronic hype acts...
