The Wonder Years Unlock New Music with Thrice Cover ‘Deadbolt’ from Hopeless Records Compilation

Following from their explosive ‘Year Of The Vulture’, The Wonder Years have grown their 2024 catalog with the release of ‘Deadbolt’. The track, of course, is a cover of Thrice's 2002 hit, but why?

The cover is a homage to Hopeless Records, celebrating the label's 30th year in the industry. With a single cover glaring the words 'Hopelessly Devoted To You', the performance is a clear indication of the band's support for the long-running establishment that hosts some of the many bands we love and support immensely!

This short and punchy track allows the band to continue to divulge into their angsty era, separating themselves from the poignantly upsetting and existential anthems they are known for, and instead, replacing these feelings with a palpable rage and a punkish twinge. Out of the gates, a fast kickdrum and hearty riff charge through and become prominent foundationary features for the song’s two-minute length.

The track, of course, drowns in the ever-emotive vocals of Dan 'Soupy' Campbell, laced with aching and exasperation that is heard through every slight growl and raspy note. With ease, and a natural conviction, the band adopts a tone of that heavy 2000s rock energy- there is something nostalgic that still remains all these years beyond the original release.

On the song (and home with Hopeless), Soupy says:

“I think we are the longest tenured Hopeless Records artist of all time. It was the label that took a shot on us when everyone else passed. The label that changed our lives. We are deeply ingrained in the company’s history, and so when I say Happy 30th Birthday, it’s not just because I’m proud of them, it’s because I’m proud of us. All of us. We built some amazing, lasting things together, as a team. Because of that, I don’t think you could have a 30th Anniversary comp without The Wonder Years and we’re very excited we got to do the legendary Thrice track, “Deadbolt.” Recording it pushed us to places we don’t always go as a band, and it was both a blast and an honour.”

This track was a big one to tackle! What are your thoughts on ‘Deadbolt’
