The heavy/alternative scene in Australia is home to a well-kept pool of talented musicians who are quite often disregarded for not fitting a particular 'category' or 'sound', or are just too risky for mainstream media to even consider looking at.Whether you're making music with aggressive gutturals, blastbeats or simply covering subject manner that's still considered taboo to some, you'll always find a home at Wall Of Sound - because all great music deserves to be spoken about.Today we're checking in with PeniParker, an alternative pop rock hybrid act from Sydney who has dabbled in some heavy sounds and stood out from the rest of the pack with their latest single 'Curse'. Combining chunky riffs with frantic synth, it's a concoction of fast and furious moshpit-inducing action with screams-a-plenty that wouldn't be out of place on a lineup alongside Redhook or Bring Me The Horizon.Growing up, stong female leads in music helped pave the way for new generations to succeed and get a leg up, and I'm stating that Peni Parker's ambitious display of rock-chick turned screamer harks back to notable acts such as No Doubt, Evanescence, The Veronicas, Poppy, BABYMETAL, Killing Heidi, Redhook and of course, TaylorSwift.Hellbent on finding more out about Parker's new tune and influences, we grabbed her for a chat, to dive into 'Curse' and look ahead to the future...Hey Peni Parker! You've been making music for a little while, but for those not in the know, tell us your spiderman origin story. So started out on Earth-14512.. actually, scratch that I don’t want to set off the Marvel lawyers.I’ve always been creating and jamming with humans behind the scenes, but nothing really felt like the right fit sonically and visually. It quickly turned into a wild solo adventure, supported by some stupidly talented creatives who have helped me bring my ideas to life.Admittedly I’m an annoying perfectionist, so it’s been fun working with different producers and artists who can push me outside of my comfort zone, like how Curse was born. BUNNY was a dream to collaborate with, they have such an insane drive so we just clicked instantly.Your new song 'Curse' is killer. An instant attention grabber that I've personally labelled as Redhook meets BMTH - what inspired the ferocity of this new single?Oh big call, thank you! To be honest I wrote the top line for this early last year in the midst of a pretty depressive episode. I recorded it sitting on my bathroom floor, as that’s all I had energy for and just gave everything I could at the time. I was so excited to work with BUNNY but my brain timing was definitely not ideal haha I just wanted to do the idea justice. We’re both huge jujutsu kaisen fans, so the energy was me embodying the character. Sukuna lives by his own whims and desires, answering to no-one. He personifies selfishness, hedonism and greed, so it was definitely entertaining writing from that perspective, because I’ve always been such a people pleaser. So it’s completely fake it to you make it ferocity in this case, but inadvertently writing and recording it was pretty cathartic. You're an alt-rock goddess, and I hear influences like No Doubt with some of your earlier material. Who would you say are three acts that compliment your overall sound?Woah! Making me blush!!I’d say my chemical romance and one ok rock have been my most consistent sound inspirations, they both explore rock sub-genres and dive into political themes which I always gravitate toward. Then I’d say the pretty reckless, vocally growing up I had a pretty similar range to Taylor and was so impressed by her grit.[caption id="attachment_178867" align="aligncenter" width="300"]

For those who love 'Curse' but want to get into your back catalogue, where should they start next?Two-Face and Lady, both just as ragey and have that punchy energy to match! What's on the horizon for Peni Parker?I think you’re going to hear some different PARKER side quests this year. Guaranteed rage cause I am in a constant state of anger at the condition of the world right now, bit of left over emo and diving into some completely new territory too!Words by Paul ‘Browny’ Brown@brownypaul
