Long Distance Relationships Suck.
You're pining for the person you need in your life and they're stuck in another state, hundreds (if not thousands) of kilometres away. The joys of dating, amirite?
Well, that's the perfect time to introduce Smacked Youth - an Aussie punk rock duo from Newcastle made up of vocalist/guitarist Sam D’Agostino and drummer Jake Ellis - who today have dropped their latest single 'RUT' which - as you guessed it - is about being stuck in a relationship from afar.
From the second Sam's vocals kick in, you're met with that unique Aussie twang that sets Australian bands apart from the rest of the punk scene. The dynamic musicianship between Sam and Jake captivates with their elegant performance - providing soaring riffs, singalong sections and an emotional whining delivery akin to that of icons of yesteryear such as Violent Soho, Gyroscope, Jebediah and British India.
On the very relatable personal subject of the song's themes, Sam shares:
"'RUT' is about being in a long distance relationship with someone who lives in another state and trying to work out how to build a life together, even though neither people want to move to a different city..." The shituation the protagonist is in finds them questioning their life choices, before coming to the realisation, "Neither person fits in outside of their home cities and the whole long distance relationship [therefore] is a bit of a stretch."
Been there? Yep, it sucks. Sometimes you stick it out, others, you just end things before they have time to bloom.

Not that it's a worry for the band, they've managed to catch the attention of British India who slotted them on their upcoming Newcastle show on October 11th. Smacked Youth will also find themselves opening for Rose Tattoo on October 4th at the Huntlee Tavern.
It appears the alternative rock scene has welcomed the Newey duo with open arms having already shared stages with DZ Deathrays and Strung Out last year, before they hopped on The Screaming Jets massive 24-date tour which wrapped up earlier this year. The boys also spread their wings playing shows in London, Amsterdam and Berlin in 2023, it won't be long before the rest of the world catches onto their approach to emotive Aussie punk rock.
