Resin Tomb - Brisbane-Based Dissonant Death Metallers Prepare 'Cerebral Purgatory'

Never before has the Australian heavy music scene been stronger than it is today. With Aussie artists highly positioned in the worlds of deathcore, metalcore, death metal and more, our continent shines brightly on the international metal playing field.

On the back of their fantastic self-titled 2020 demo and supporting diverse acts like Disentomb, Defeated Sanity and hardcore supergroup END, Brisbane five-piece Resin Tomb have quickly made a name for themselves locally and abroad with their furiously grinding, cacophonous assault.

With their debut full length Cerebral Purgatory penciled in for a late 2023 release, Wall of Sound got to pick the brain of Resin Tomb frontman Matthew Budge about the backstory of the group, working with international labels, their upcoming album, the state of the current heavy music scene in Australia and much more.

Thanks for chatting with us here at Wall of Sound! For those new at home, how did Resin Tomb form and what’s the history of the band?

Resin Tomb formed in 2019. We have all played in bands together leading up to this formation, most notably with Siberian Hell Sounds. We already played music that was harsh and heavy, but we wanted to mix some more of our favorite genres into the sound we were already dabbling with, most notably some dissonance and grind aspects. We had one jam and wrote ‘Prostrated’, so after leaving that jam, we knew what sound we wanted to work towards and started writing and recording.

Your sound is hard to pin down exactly - there’s elements of grindcore, tech-death, and sludge metal - who do Resin Tomb count as your main influences?

I’m sure it varies from each member, but some notable band favorites are; Artificial Brain, Gorguts, Ulcerate, Disentomb, Wiegedood, Dragged Into Sunlight, Wake, Teeth, Faceless Burial and Dead Congregation.

Following Resin Tomb’s 2020 demo EP, in 2022 you dropped the Unconsecrated // Ascendancy release through American-based label Total Dissonance Worship. How did Resin Tomb come to work with TDW and label-head Simon Hawemann?

Simon from Total Dissonance Worship messaged us privately on Instagram after the release of our 2020 EP to ask if we had any distribution in place for the US. We didn’t, so he proceeded to do a limited tape release for that EP. He was an absolute pleasure to work with, and put faith in us immediately, so when it came time to figure out the release of Unconsecrated // Ascendancy we asked if he would like to be involved again, to which he was very receptive. Simon is a weapon; we can’t thank him and Bursky (Brilliant Emperor Records) enough for their support.

In June you announced some of the details for the debut Resin Tomb full length Cerebral Purgatory - what can we expect on the album and when can we expect a release date?

When you can expect the album to be released is in the air right now. It’s been sent away for vinyl pressing, and once we have a confirmed date for that completion we will have a release date, we have tried to preempt vinyl pressing finishing dates in the past and it backfired on us, so we need to make sure that’s sorted first. As for what to expect, 29 minutes of dissonant death. The release is eight songs long and is to date the most vicious and cohesive songwriting we have produced. I can’t wait to share it with everyone honestly.

Was the new LP produced in house? What was the production process like?

Everything was recorded in house by our guitarist Brendan Auld at his studio Black Blood Audio (except for drum tracking, it was still recorded by Brendan, but at Qsound Audio Services at the Gold Coast). The process was amazing, we have all been friends for a long time, we know what we are capable of, and we have thick skin, so Brendan pushed us all hard to get the most out of us. Being able to do it in-house is an incredible experience, except for the drum tracking there was no time limit, which allowed for endless takes and lots of scrutiny.

Your debut will be released by international metal label Transcending Obscurity Records - how did Resin Tomb’s relationship with the label start?

Funnily enough it was a very similar situation to Simon from TDW. Kunal from Transcending Obscurity added Brendan personally on Instagram, and sent him a DM to ask about what our future plans were and if we had any intention of releasing an album soon. We told him we were in the process of recording it, so we sent him some demos. Kunal was on board immediately, and the rest is history.

On top of Resin Tomb, all members have played/play in other bands - most notably Crossface. What can you quickly tell me about that more hardcore-leaning group and the other acts Resin Tomb members play in?

We are a very incestuous bunch haha. We all came up on Hardcore, and we all have played/play in several bands together, I won’t bore you with too much history, but here is a quick rundown of post and active bands we are involved with together.

What do you think of the current state of the extreme music scene in Australia?

It’s going off man, honestly, it’s an exciting time to be a heavy music enthusiast or musician right now. People are going to shows, turning up for their scene and supporting each other along the way. It extends past cities, the support shown to one another right now is at an all-time high and I couldn’t be more excited for it. I think bands from down under sometimes get overlooked because we are so far away, but if you are in the scene, you know it’s as strong as ever right now.

Closer to home, what are some other fresh and hot heavy Brissie artists to keep an eye on?

Brisbane/Gold Coast is crushing it right now! Disentomb, Shitgrinder, Slow Cut, Blind Girls, Deafcult, Hope Drone, Crave Death, Halfman, Deathbed, Knuckledragger, Wetwork, MUD, Glitterstrip, World of Joy, TOY, Dream Inertia, Cold Blood, Entrapment and many more.

Can you sum up Resin Tomb in three words for us?

Unrivalled Doog Lords

Thanks heaps for your time! Any final words?

Listen to Aussie music, support your scene, buy their merch. Being in a band is financially challenging, and life commitments get in the way, so if bands are putting in the effort for your scene, support them back. Also, listen to Burial Pit.
