The southern Australian states better watch their backs because the Brisbane/Meanjin is proving the next generation of heavy bands will emerge from the Sunshine State. As our new-age notables strive for national domination, attention turns to the underground scene where RVN//NT (pronounced Revenant) are currently cutting their teeth, playing a stack of local shows following the release of their two lead singles this year. The band consisting of vocalist ConnorGutteridge, guitarist DamonGutteridge, drummer JakeBrown and bassist AdenBlanch burst onto the scene with debut single 'Void of Mind' and set tongues wagging with their approach to modern metalcore - scoring praise and amassing a loyal following in the process.Today they're back to chat new song 'Distain' a metalcore fan's wet dream combining action packed riffs with plenty of djent thrown around. Frontman Connor's intertwining harsh and clean vocals are reminiscent of early In Hearts Wake. Despite bordering on the rawer side of the production scale, it steers away from overproducing allowing each musician to flow into one another without any overzealous spotlight holding. It's musicianship like this that will set the lads up for an impressive launch as they work towards a feature length down the track. We chatted with the band about their new release's inspiration, their origin story and what their sights are set on as they head into the release cycle of their third single.Hey RVN//NT - Welcome to Wall Of Sound - before we get stuck into things, tell us how you came to be.Well, RVN//NT started back in 2020 at the height of COVID as my brother Damon (guitarist) and I had an idea to start a band together. I have been in and out of bands most of my life but had around 3 years away from music after my previous band fell apart. This never really turned into anything other than a couple of cool riffs and an idea of what we wanted to do.Until 2022, when we actually made a start with creating music, and this was also when Jake (drummer), who I had worked with in bands previously joined the band. However, even back in 2022, we had the issue of distance because I was living in Canberra and Jake and Damon were in Queensland. Fast forward to the end of 2023 after I finally came back to QLD, after much debate on the lineup, Jake and I saw Aden (bassist) play with his band Vola Inertia and we knew straight away that he was the guy we needed for RVN//NT. We got in the studio and recorded both ‘Void of Mind’ and ‘Bleed Within’ and the rest is history really.https://www.tiktok.com/@rvnnt_au_band/video/7350797162600566017?_r=1&_t=8jl1otrnbh7You're here today to premiere your new track 'Distain' which combines alluring cleans with screams and djent-filled riffs - tell us what inspired this track? Our writing process has stayed the same since the beginning, everything starts with Damon sending us a basic structure for a song, then Jake gets his hands on it, makes some changes and we go from there. ‘Distain’ was, I believe, the 5th track that Damon sent through to us in the late stages of 2023, and we all knew right from the time that Damon sent this through to us that this was going to be huge. For me as vocalist, the lyrics to this track were inspired from previous experience with substance abuse and the deep, dark mental health effects that are driven by this and vice versa the mental health issues that lead to addiction. This track dives into the deepest, darkest, common themes that not only myself but a lot of people that I have spoken with go through when it comes to addiction and mental health difficulties. We touch a lot on mental health in our tracks, but ‘Distain’ got me as a lyricist to dive into the depths of my experience and drove me to write this track as a beacon of hope for anyone who is going through these things, you are not alone, things do get better! Musically, I love the transition between scream vocals and high end clean vocals, I feel it gives a bigger feel to the track and allows people to see my full range as a vocalist.I'm hearing elements of In Hearts Wake, Architects and Northlane in the track, who would you say are the band's biggest influences musically? You hit the nail on the head, we have tried to remain very fluid with our writing and taking elements from all of our backgrounds into RVN//NT. We all come with different influences in our music tastes but I believe that our common influences are Northlane, Architects and Polaris (with so many more). I feel that this track takes influences from all of these bands and a taste of all of our individual influences.
We always have this joke of what do you get when you put a Nu-Metal singer, a Prog Rock/Metal drummer, a Metalcore bassist and a bedroom guitarist in a band together? You get RVN//NT!
This isn't your first rodeo, you dropped 'Bleed Within' back in April and 'Void of Mind' in March - how was the reception and how has it ignited the fire within?‘Bleed Within’ was our second track released and the reception to this track has been amazing. All the comments from our listeners so far have been very positive with people being keen to hear what comes next. ‘Bleed Within’ in my opinion did not drop quite as well as our first track ‘Void of Mind’ but the opinion on both tracks has been mutual. We love all of our listeners and hearing all the positivity to both tracks has been the ultimate factor that has lit the fire in RVN//NT and makes us just that more excited to see people's reaction to ‘Distain’ and other releases we have coming after that.In terms of your namesake - which band do you wish would come back from the dead?Good question! Until a few years ago when they did come back, I always said Mudvayne but obviously that has come back from the dead and I got the pleasure of seeing them earlier this year. Currently, I would have to say Linkin Park for me. Chester has always been such a significant influence for me as a singer and I am happy to be one of the people that did see them a couple of times prior to his tragic death. I always get so worried when I see things online about them finding a new singer, but that's a whole other conversation. We always like to ask new bands we come across what their 3 main goals are at the moment, so what's yours right now?I guess every band wants to get ‘big’, have billions of fans and be sought after for incredible shows all over the world, and don’t get me wrong this is a long-term goal of ours, although we said from the beginning of RVN//NT that this was never going to be the reason we do this. But if we are thinking about it right now, I would say that our goals for RVN//NT are as follows. Number 1: To continue to put out music that our listeners really love and that will get out to the world to hear. Number 2: Would be to play shows with incredible bands all over the country and eventually the world. And number 3: and in my opinion the most important of them all. To continue to do what we love and continue to have fun while we are doing it. If you're doing it without having fun with it, why do it?https://www.instagram.com/p/C7TjLnFBRKw/?igsh=MW1hOHg1NnZrd3dzbw%3D%3D&img_index=1Following the release of 'Distain' tomorrow, what should we keep an eye out for from RVN//NT HQ?People can be on the lookout for 2 more singles coming over the coming months and then we will be dropping our first EP later this year. We are super excited for the rest of 2024 and cannot wait to share more of RVN//NT with the world.
