The lead-up to You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To has been nothing short of intoxicating, displaying Knocked Loose at their most barbaric, charged, and artistically professional yet. This is an unwavering statement, especially with the release of their latest single, ‘Suffocate’. Employing the aid of the always mysterious Poppy, the band has created a dynamic between the petite and the powerful- elements in which both of the acts fluctuate between, to create a track that is not merely set to stand out from the album, but is a charismatic and unique feature within the band's discography.
‘Suffocate’ begins with a chugging entrance that promptly begins to battle with an encapsulating, distorted strum. From the opening moments, the track not merely creates, but hones into this heavily layered and emotionally burdensome feeling of dread and depth that the new album promotes heavily. As the sound world builds up, a signature cymbal flick prepares the listener for warfare. With a call to arms, Garris’ vocals take the floor, beautifully jarring with their charged anger and exasperation. It is certain throughout the three singles thus far, the album is nothing short of an articulated performance of vulnerability in its rawest form, and a performance of vengeance and vitality, all personified greatly through the vocals and amplified through the instrumentals.
Since I Disagree, Poppy has presented her prowess in screams, and grimy vocals, all while still fostering her enigmatic delicacy which has seen her become a prolific figure throughout genres. This year, it seems Poppy is all but taking over the metalcore world, with multiple features, and rightfully so. Poppy’s inclusion begins with no warning, allowing her sharp screams to claw at you alongside Garris’, in a beautiful yet brutal harmony. However, the track also lets her explore her delicate whispers and android-like spoken words in unique spaces; most notably, in the lead-up to the breakdown. With her softly spoken voice leaping into the screams of the breakdown, there is a dichotomy created that is a testament to the two artists’ unique individual styles, molded together in a perfect marriage of brutality and daintiness.
‘Suffocate’ continues the sharp trajectory for Knocked Loose, and once again aids in constructing the image of this album; one that has so far, been painted as perhaps one of their most profound works yet. With only a few weeks to go until You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To, this is sure to tie us over!
